There are spinners who would be happy to catch pike at least all year round, but still, nature must rest, and the arrival of cold weather will contribute to this. I refer myself to the above mentioned category, and if it were my will, I would not let spinning out of my hands all year round, but I understand that nature does not take into account our desires, and we will always have to adapt to it. Let’s talk about the most catchy baits for autumn pike.
Almost every year in October, the period of the so-called “Indian summer” begins, when the temperature outside rises and stays at this level for up to 5-10 days. The sun is shining outside at this time and, probably, it is not difficult to guess what spinning fans are thinking about. Pike during this period is activated, and as a rule, it is at this time that you can catch the largest trophy specimens.
Where to fish in October – November?
As for the choice of a reservoir, everything is up to the angler. It is very good if the angler has a choice. But most often the choice is small and those reservoirs are preferred, on which the last September fishing was the most productive.
In most areas of our Motherland, small rivers flow with a medium and fast current, which are very well suited for October fishing with spinning. Also, good results can be achieved when catching pike in large reservoirs and large lakes, if you know, of course, the places of its pre-winter “parking”.
What to catch trophy pike?
This question with full seriousness can be attributed to the category of hackneyed. But, oddly enough, it is still always relevant. I am not chasing fishing fashion, realizing that the “tastes” of pike practically do not change in a year, five, ten, so I present to your attention my top most effective baits for pike fishing in the fall. It includes spinners and wobblers, tested in practice and shown to be effective for this time of the year.
My rating of lures for fishing in late autumn:
1 place. Flashy Blue fox Shallow Super Vibrax
- Producer – Strike Pro
- Country of manufacture – Sweden
- Type of bait – spinner, “revolver”
- Size (length) – No. 3-4
- Weight – 8-12 g
- Coloring – in assortment
- Number of hooks – 1 tee
A confident first place for me, at least, is held by Blue fox Shallow Super Vibrax No. 4 spinners weighing 12 g from an Estonian manufacturer. The coloring of the petal and the core can be the most diverse (golden, silver, copper, and various solid colors, from black to red). This bait is used by me both in stagnant reservoirs and on rivers. The best time for biting autumn pike, in my opinion, is the second half of the day, until the evening dawn. The wiring is classic, with medium and low speed, almost at the stall of the rotation of the petal. Wiring can be done both in the bottom layer and in the upper layers of water.
2nd place. Wobbler Flamingo
- Producer – ТМ Flamingo
- Country of origin – China
- Lure type – wobbler, floating
- Size (length) – 65 mm
- Weight – 10,5 g
- Coloring page – golden yellow “tiger”
- Number of hooks – 2 tees
Golden yellow, with a darkish back, weighing 10,5 grams. Deepening from 0 to 1,5 meters. This wobbler is best used in small areas of reservoirs, using the full range of wobblers. It is most effective when using wiring with an ascent to the surface or into the near-surface layer of water. The greatest number of bites occurs at the moment of the beginning of the movement after the ascent or at the moment the bait dives from the surface of the water.
3 place. Williams Wabler flashed
- Manufacturer: Williams
- Country of manufacture – Canada
- Lure type – spinner, oscillating
- Size (length) – 60-100 mm
- Weight – 21 g
- Coloring page – yellow-gold
- Number of hooks – 1 tee
The bait is used in reservoirs with stagnant water, medium (up to 3-4 m) depths, in uncharged places, near underwater vegetation, on pronounced reliefs. Type of wiring from uniform to jerky, depending on the situation. Works great in the falling phase. I use it mainly for active search for pike of any size.
4th place. Spinner Lusox
- Producer: Mepps
- Country of manufacture – France / China
- Lure type – spinner, rotating
- Size (length) – No. 3
- Weight – 20 g
- Coloring – white, yellow
- Number of hooks – 1 tee
Universal lure. Thanks to the removable weight head, it allows you to fish in various conditions and at different depths. It has a very stable rotation of the petal, passes well through thickets of soft aquatic vegetation. Pike reacts positively to it almost always. Wiring is possible both uniform and jigging (using a weight-head). Mainly medium-sized pikes are caught.
5th place. Musky Killer flashed
- Producer: Mepps
- Country of manufacture – France / China
- Lure type – spinner, rotating
- Size (length) – No. 2
- Weight – 15 g
- Coloring – white, yellow
- Number of hooks – 1 tee
Thanks to the huge “front sight” attached to the tee, the lure has a fairly large visible size. Optimal for fishing at shallow depths, in overgrown ponds. It shows the best results when fishing in the morning, after sunrise, and in the evening – at sunset. Wiring is uniform, rather slow. The spinner is liked mainly by rather large pikes, obviously due to its size.
6th place. Atom flashed
- Producer – A-Elita
- Country of manufacture – Russia
- Lure type – spinner, oscillating
- Size (length) – 65, 75 mm
- Weight – 20 g
- Coloring – white, yellow
- Number of hooks – 1 tee
A heavy lure with a wide play. It is used mainly at fairly large depths, in places where pike are concentrated. Wiring from uniform to jig. I mainly use it in combination with other baits, in view of the fact that the powerful game of this spinner often provokes an inactive pike to bite.
7 place. Vibrochvost Spirit
- Producer: Mann’s
- Country of origin – China
- Lure type – silicone bait, vibrotail
- Size (length) – 90, 100, 120 mm
- Weight – depending on the equipment used
- Coloring – white, yellow, oil, green, mother-of-pearl
- Number of hooks – depending on the equipment used
A vibrotail with a soft and wide play of the tail, which the pike likes very much. I use it with all types of rigs: from jigging, when fishing at great depths and fairly clean bottoms, to waki, when fishing from a boat in algae thickets. It is perfect for grinding inactive autumn pike, because, thanks to the thin tail stalk, it actively plays with the slowest haul. They peck, both small pencils and worthy specimens.
Using the baits listed above, you can be guaranteed to catch pike in almost any body of water and under any minimum acceptable conditions. As the practical experience of fishing with spinning has shown, these are truly “working” spinners and wobblers that will not leave the angler without a good trophy.
