Symptoms of the disease
- a whitish layer most often forming at the level of lower incisors, on the side of the tongue, but also on the other teeth.
On distingue :
- le supragingival calculus : visible to the naked eye, generally whitish in color but may take on brownish tints following the consumption of coffee, tea or tobacco.
- le subgingival calculus is deposited on the root of the tooth, away from the gum, at the level of periodontal pockets. Often darker, this tartar is the most damaging to the teeth.
People at risk
- The elderly.
- People who experience drought in the mouth or a low production of saliva (xerostomia).
Risk factors
- Smoking.
- La taking medication, such as antidepressants and anticholinergics, inducing decreased production of saliva, which leads to increased plaque development.
- Exposure to certain treatments involving radiation (radiotherapy).
