vaginoplasty

Vaginoplasty is surgery to build a vagina and clitoris from the male sex organs. This surgical transformation is a complex procedure that is part of the management of transsexuality. Vaginoplasty also refers to surgery to rejuvenate the vagina.

What does a vaginoplasty mean?

For a more aesthetic vagina

Vaginoplasty refers to cosmetic surgery to rejuvenate the vagina. It aims to increase vaginal sensitivity in women whose vagina has suffered during childbirth. For this, the intervention aims to reduce the inner and outer diameter of the vagina, tighten the muscles of the perineum and rejuvenate the vagina by injecting fat on the vaginal mucosa.

As part of a sex change

Vaginoplasty also refers to sex reassignment surgery. The scientific term for this male-female genital transformation in the context of transsexualism is aïdoïopoiesis. It consists of transforming the male genitals into female genitalia.

How is a vaginoplasty performed?

Before a rejuvenating vaginoplasty

A preoperative blood test is performed as well as a consultation with an anesthesiologist. Vaginal rejuvenation surgery is performed under general anesthesia and requires one or two days of hospitalization.

It has three stages: the surgeon first strengthens the tissues of the pelvic floor (between the vagina and the anus) to tighten the vaginal opening at the muscular level. He then closes the vagina at the bottom then takes the fat to inject it on the walls of the vaginal mucosa to reduce the opening of the vagina and restore sensitivity.

You can go out the day of the operation or the next day.

Before a vaginoplasty to change sex

Hormonal therapy is stopped two to three weeks before the procedure. The person who will undergo this operation is hospitalized the day before the operation.

During this surgery, which lasts two to four hours under general anesthesia, the surgeon removes both testicles and the contents of the penis, then creates a vagina using the skin of the penis welded at the end and turned inwards ( and an additional skin graft if necessary).

The clitoris is created from the top of the glans. The foreskin is used to create the labia minora, the outer parts of the scrotum to create the labia majora.

In which cases to have a vaginoplasty?

You may want / need to have vaginal rejuvenation vaginoplasty when you have less vaginal tenderness and / or organ descent. This is mainly the result of one or more deliveries that damaged the vagina. This intervention is not reimbursed if it has a purely aesthetic objective. It takes around 3000 to 5000 euros. If this intervention is carried out to repair the vagina, Social Security and mutual insurance companies can take part of it.

When it comes to a vaginoplasty in the context of transsexualism, this intervention can be requested by men suffering from what is called gender dysphonia, a feeling of inequality between their sex and their identity. gender (men who see themselves as women). This intervention requires being of legal age, providing the letter of a psychiatrist and having benefited from treatment with replacement hormones for at least one year. This vaginoplasty is largely reimbursed by Social Security.

Vaginoplasty: follow-up and results

After vaginal rejuvenation vaginoplasty

The operative consequences of a rejuvenating vaginoplasty are simple and not very painful. After vaginal rejuvenation vaginoplasty, you can resume your activities after 5-6 days. Sex and soort can only be resumed after one month.

The results are visible in about 6 weeks: the aesthetic appearance is improved, the sexual pleasure superior and the problems of urinary incontinence. These results are long-lasting and do not prevent a new childbirth.

After male-female transformation vaginoplasty

The postoperative effects are quite heavy with the wearing of a urinary catheter. During the postoperative period and for several months, it is necessary to wear a prosthesis to have the maximum width and depth of the vagina.

Hospitalization lasts 8 to 10 days and then requires a period of convalescence and sick leave of 6 to 8 weeks.

The results are most often satisfactory: the female genitals have an appearance very close to the normal female and allow to have sexual sensations. It is only necessary to lubricate this area because the vagina is made up of skin and not of mucous membrane.

In some cases, a further small intervention is necessary to perfect the result of the front of the vagina.
