Symptoms of periodontitis
Periodontitis begins with inflammation of the gums, called gingivitis.
The first symptoms are bleeding gums, occurring either spontaneously or when brushing teeth.
As the disease progresses, other symptoms may appear such as:
- redness and swelling of the gums;
- retraction of the gums (the teeth appear longer) and the formation of pockets (empty spaces) between the teeth and the gum
- an abscess of the gum with pus;
- pain when chewing;
- teeth that move and come loose;
- persistent bad breath.
Be careful, periodontitis often develops insidiously, and symptoms usually appear late. A regular dental and periodontal examination is essential to detect periodontitis as early as possible. |
