Annually on the third Saturday of October in the United States is celebrated Sweet Day or Sweet Day (Sweetest Day).
This tradition began in Cleveland in 1921, when Herbert Birch Kingston, a philanthropist and confectionery worker, decided to help disadvantaged orphans, the poor, and all those in hard times.
Kingston gathered a small group of residents of the city, and with the help of friends, they organized the distribution of small gifts in order to somehow support the hungry, those whom the government had forgotten a long time ago.
On the first Sweets Day movie star Ann Pennington gave 2200 Cleveland newspaper delivery boys sweet gifts in gratitude for their hard work.
Another big movie star, Theda Bara, donated 10 boxes of chocolates to Cleveland hospital patients and everyone who came to see her movie at the local cinema.
Initially, Sweets Day was celebrated mainly in the central and western regions of the United States – in the states of Illinois, Michigan and Ohio. In recent years, the popularity of the holiday has grown significantly, and now the geography of the celebration covers other regions of the United States, in particular, the northeastern part of the country.
Ohio, home of Sweets Day, has the most sweet products on this day. It is followed by California, Florida, Michigan and Illinois in the top ten sales leaders.
This holiday serves as an excellent occasion (along with) to express romantic feelings and friendships. On this day, it is customary to give chocolate or roses, as well as everything that is the embodiment of delicious – after all, it is assumed that love should be sweet, like milk chocolate!
