Description of the strawberry variety “Zephyr”
The strawberry variety “Zephyr”, shown in the photo, is one of the best, according to gardeners’ reviews, for getting ultra-early harvests under the film. It was bred in Denmark. The compact, powerful bushes give a lot of whiskers. The variety is suitable for commercial cultivation, as the crop tolerates transportation and storage in a dark room for up to 2 days.
Ripening of strawberries “Zephyr” in greenhouse conditions begins in early May. Berries of orange-red color can be conical or ribbed, resembling a cockscomb, the average weight of one berry is from 40 to 65 grams
Peduncles are strong plants. Despite the large berries, they do not lean to the ground. The crop is not affected by gray mold.
Strawberry “Zephyr” gives a harvest in the first year after planting, seedlings are planted from mid-August to mid-September. The berry grows well in fertile soil that is easily permeable to water. Loams with neutral acidity are best suited for it. The site for planting is chosen open and well-lit.
Plants are planted in the evening or on cloudy days. When the seedlings are placed in the holes, make sure that the apical bud is at ground level. The mustache is removed from the plant once every 10 days.
With proper care, more than 1 kg of berries can be harvested from one bush. The variety is resistant to most diseases and pests. To get a good harvest, one should not forget about regular watering and feeding.
At the end of March, plants are fed with organic and nitrogen fertilizers, and at the end of April – with complex mineral preparations.
For watering, choose the morning or evening time. In dry weather, you can water the plants daily. Around the bushes, the soil is covered with straw. This keeps the berries from contacting the ground and increases the fruiting of strawberries.
For the winter, the plants are covered with straw or agrofibre. It is better not to use the film for these purposes, as the plants under it may die. In early spring, the covering material is removed and the beds are cleared of old leaves.
The Zephyr variety is loved by gardeners and farmers for stable yields from the first year of planting. Berries with a sweet taste and unusual aroma are large, have a beautiful presentation and good transportability.
