Several studies conducted among people with peptic ulcer suggest that they can improve the effectiveness of conventional antibiotic treatment while reducing digestive disorders (diarrhea, bloating) associated with taking these drugs1,2.

Dosage

Take 125 million to 4 billion CFU of Lactobacillus jonhnsonii per day, in addition to conventional treatment.

 Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra). In vitro and animal studies have shown that deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) stimulates the production of mucus in the stomach8. It thus reinforces its natural protection against the action of hydrochloric acid or certain drugs, in particular acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin®)3. Other studies have also shown that licorice also helps fight infection with the bacteria. Helicobacter pylori. Commission E recognizes the use of licorice to prevent and treat ulcers in the stomach and duodenum.

Dosage

Consult our Liquorice sheet.

 German chamomile (Matricaria recutita). German chamomile has long been used to relieve digestive disorders, includingstomach ulcer andulcer duodenal9,10. No clinical studies have yet been conducted in humans. According to Rudolf Fritz Weiss, doctor and expert in herbal medicine, chamomile infusion is especially effective in preventing ulcers. As an adjuvant, it can also relieve the symptoms12.

Dosage

Consult our German Chamomile sheet.

 Turmeric (Curcuma longa). Turmeric has been used in the traditional way to treat peptic ulcers. In vitro and animal studies indicate that it has protective effects on the gastric mucosa and that it can destroy or inhibit the bacteria. Helicobacter pylori14-16 .

Dosage

Consult our Curcuma file.

 Nopal (Opuntia ficus indica). The flowers of this plant were traditionally used in Latin America to treat colic and prevent the formation ofgastric ulcers. The beneficial effects of nopal on the digestive system are explained, in part at least, by its high content of pectin and mucilage. Animal testing results show nopal to have anti-ulcer action17 and anti-inflammatory18.

Dosage

Traditionally, it is recommended to use a flower extract (1: 1) at the rate of 0,3 ml to 1 ml, 3 times a day.

 Red elm (red ulmus ou Ulmus fulva). Slippery elm is a tree native to all of eastern North America. His liber (the inner part of the bark) has long been used by Native Americans to treat sore throats, coughs, irritations and ulcers of the digestive tract.

Dosage

Dissolve 15 g to 20 g of bast powder (inner part of the bark) in 150 ml of cold water. Bring to a boil and simmer gently for 10 to 15 minutes. Drink this preparation 3 times a day.

 Worry (Calendula officinalis). Marigold is a medicinal plant widely used around the world, especially for skin care. In the XIXe century, the Eclectics, a group of American physicians who used herbs in conjunction with official medicines, employed marigold to treat ulcers in the stomach and duodenum.

 Cabbage juice and potato juice. These 2 juices were formerly part of the therapeutic arsenal21. Concentrated cabbage juice is obtained by squeezing a white cabbage (brassica oleracea). This juice was used to accelerate the healing of peptic ulcers, although its taste might seem off-putting. The juice of the raw common potato (Solanum tuberosum) would reduce stomach pain.

 Stress management. The Dr Andrew Weil20 suggests the following actions, especially when ulcers respond poorly to treatment or come back:

– reserve time slots devoted to relaxation;

– do deep breathing or visualization sessions;

– if necessary, identify its main sources of stress and then seek a solution to eliminate them or reduce their scope.

 Chinese Pharmacopoeia. There is a preparation specially designed for gastric hyperacidity disorders: the Wei Te Ling. It is used, among other things, to strengthen and restore the stomach. the Wei Te Ling relieves pain and helps regenerate ulcerated gastric mucosa tissue, but does not treat the cause of the disease.

Caution. In some people with stomach ulcers or duodenal ulcers, taking strong menthol lozenges or peppermint essential oil can irritate the lining of the mouth or exacerbate an ulcer.
