Spirea in the fall: pruning, transplanting

Spirea is a large shrub with abundant flowering. They are divided into blooming in spring and blooming in summer. The flowering period lasts about 6 weeks. Spirea care in the fall includes pruning and transplanting, if necessary. Remember that the plant is preparing for a dormant period during this period.

Before pruning, indicate for what purpose you need it. Depending on this, you can choose the right time for it.

In the fall, it is better to carry out rejuvenating pruning of spirea so that in the spring the old branches do not take away the energy of the plant.

Spirea pruning is carried out in two cases:

  1. If you want to give the spirea a beautiful shape.
  2. And anti-aging pruning, during which excess branches are removed.

The pruning process is fairly easy and is of great benefit to the shrub. The procedure performed in the fall will allow the plant to spend energy in the spring for flowering and growth.

When pruning a spirea, consider the following features:

  • prepare quality tools that are sharply sharpened. Thanks to this, you will make neat incisions that heal quickly;
  • remove branches carefully so as not to damage the plant, and also not to harm yourself;
  • all old and dry branches are subject to removal, as well as those that are susceptible to disease;
  • for bushes that have reached the age of 10 years old branches should be removed more carefully. Thanks to this, you will rejuvenate the plant, and it will form a new crown.

Formative pruning can be done in the spring. But in the fall, it is undesirable, since the plant will need more strength in order to bounce back.

In the fall, spireas tolerate transplantation well. It is better if the weather is cloudy on the day of transplantation. Observe the order:

  1. Delete the old branches before doing this.
  2. Dig up the bush carefully.
  3. Dig a hole that is suitable for the size.
  4. Place the bush and cover the hole with soil and water liberally.

The transplant process is very simple. Many gardeners say that the spirea transplant is well tolerated due to its unpretentiousness. When transplanting in the fall, do not fertilize, as the plant is already preparing for the dormant period. In one place, the bush can grow for about 10-15 years.

Spirea is a great perennial shrub for your garden. Due to its unpretentiousness and resistance to cold, it perfectly suits our climate. It is important to prune every year and remove old branches in a timely manner. Then the spirea will retain its decorative appearance and annually delight you with its flowering period.
