Somniloquy: talking in your sleep, why?

Somniloquy: talking in your sleep, why?

Sometimes all of us talk in our sleep. But for some, this common and most often occasional phenomenon emerges as a recurring disorder on a daily basis. Should we be worried? Is somniloquy indicative of discomfort? Explanations.

Does sleepiness prevent restful sleep?

Talking while sleeping can occur at any stage of sleep, especially when you are in deep and REM sleep, which is the best time to dream.

But according to the research results put forward by the neuropsychologist, sleepiness has no impact on sleep or on health, which is why it is not really considered a disease. Indeed, in the vast majority of cases, the sleeper is not awakened by the sentences or the sounds he emits. If you sleep with a sleepy person, don’t ask them questions and let them talk without intervening so as not to disturb them.

Should you consult a doctor when talking in your sleep?

If you live in the daily life of a sleepy person or suffer from sleepiness yourself, you will probably have to learn to live with it. In fact, there is no treatment to alleviate this sleep disorder, the main risk of which is to wake those around you by overwhelming them with unpleasant or involuntary words. The simplest solution is to wear earplugs.

On the other hand, if you have the feeling that drowsiness has negative effects on the quality of your sleep, it is recommended that you consult a specialist who can check if you are not suffering from another sleep disorder.

Finally, talking repeatedly while sleeping can also be an expression of anxiety or stress that therapy can help you identify.

How to stop talking in your sleep?

If there is no treatment to suppress or reduce the somniloquy, we can try to restore a more regular sleep rhythm to hope for a decrease in these nocturnal vocalizations:

  • Go to bed at fixed times;
  • Avoid evening exercises;
  • Establish a quiet time without visual or sound stimuli before bedtime.

What is somniloquy?

Sleepiness belongs to the family of parasomnias, those unwanted events and behaviors that occur uncontrollably during sleep. It is the act of speaking or making vocalizations while sleeping.

According to a French study conducted by neuropsychologist Ginevra Uguccioni, more than 70% of the population believes that they have already spoken in their sleep. But only 1,5% of people suffer from drowsiness on a daily basis. If this sleep disorder often makes you smile, it can turn out to be a disabling disease, especially when sleeping with someone.

Talking while sleeping: what do we say?

We can consider that the fact of speaking while sleeping occurs when one is confronted with an episode of stress or a significant change in his daily life. It may also be a behavior related to the sleeper’s dream. No hypothesis has yet been proven by science.

Still according to research by Ginevra Uguccioni, 64% of somniloquists utter whispers, cries, laughter or tears and only 36% of nocturnal vocalizations are understandable words. Sentences or snippets of words usually pronounced in an interrogative or negative / aggressive tone with a lot of repetition: “What are you doing?”, “Why?”, “No!”.

Being sleepy does not mean that one suffers from sleepwalking. Common to these sleep disorders, it is estimated that they occur most often during childhood and adolescence and then subside in adulthood.
