A psychomotor therapist assesses and treats disorders of psychomotor development. He works with children or adults who have adaptation or behavioral difficulties, disabled or weakened temporarily.

In which cases to consult a psychomotor therapist?

Psychometricians are called upon to take care of premature babies who have disturbed relationships with their parents due to a sudden and early separation, young children with delays in psychomotor acquisitions or deficits in motor skills (walking, balance …)

The psychomotor therapist is also authorized to take care of people with concentration disorders, communication disorders, graphic design disorders, dyspraxia, stammering, hyperactivity, relationship disorders (in adolescents)….

It can also occur in people with Alzheimer’s, those who are stressed or depressed, who have balance disorders, psychiatric disorders, temporo-spatial disorientation (dementia), weakened by cancer, or even people with adaptation difficulties linked to a mental or motor handicap.

What does the psychomotor therapist do?

The psychomotor therapist acts on medical prescription and medical supervision. His missions ? Evaluate the psychomotor capacities of his patient (from the baby to the elderly) and seek the origin of his problems, re-educate through body therapy, help regain well-being, or even eliminate a handicap.

The psychomotor therapist already carries out a psychomotor assessment and then develops a treatment based on movement, action, verbal and non-verbal communication and emotions. Examples of forms of rehabilitation used by the psychomotor therapist: relaxation, dance, graphomotricity, games, orientation exercises …

Psychomotricity sessions can be individual or collective.

How to become a psychomotor therapist?

The psychomotor therapist holds a State diploma in Psychomotor therapists which is prepared in 3 years after the baccalaureate in a training institute. Access is by competitive examination directly after the baccalaureate or after a university year (1st common year of university health studies, STAPS, biology, etc.) The institute can be public or private. In the latter case, the training is not free. 

Psychomotor therapists work mainly in medico-psychopedagogical centers (CMPP), rehabilitation centers, psychiatric hospital services, nursing homes. 

Prepare for your visit to the psychomotor therapist

You can prepare for the first interview with the psychomotor therapist, which takes place before the psychomotor assessment. This assesses the skills and difficulties encountered. Also, you can make a list of what you noticed as difficulties in your child, your loved one or at home, and prepare a summary of what led the doctor to suggest psychomotricity sessions.
