Prevention of ankylosing spondylitis (spondylitis) / rheumatism
Can we prevent? |
Since we do not know its cause, there is no way to prevent ankylosing spondylitis. However, by some modifications of the way of life, it is possible to prevent the exacerbation of pain and decrease the stiffness. See also our Arthritis sheet (overview). |
Basic preventive measures |
In times of pain: It is advisable not to stress the painful joints. Rest, adopting certain postures, and massage can relieve pain. Outside of crisis periods: Certain rules of hygiene of life can help to preserve as much as possible the flexibility of the joints. The pains that characterize ankylosing spondylitis tend to subside after the joints “warm up”. THE’physical exercise regular is therefore strongly recommended. It is also recommended to move and stretch your joints several times a day: stretching the legs and arms, curling the spine, breathing exercises … The “cat” posture, which consists of alternating round back and hollow back to four legs, allows for example to soften the back.
