As discovered by Australian researchers, foods with high-fat content negatively affect a person’s memory.
In order to come to this conclusion, the scientists took the study involving people. For the experiment, researchers selected 110 slim and healthy students aged 20 to 23 years. Before the experiment, their diet consisted mainly of wholesome food. Participants were divided into 2 groups. The first group was fed as usual, and the second during the week, ate Belgian waffles and fast food, i.e. high-fat products.
At the beginning and at the end of the week, the participants had Breakfast at the laboratory. Then they were asked to take a memory test, as well as to assess whether they want to eat something harmful.
And what?
It turned out that the participants of the second group have deteriorated in the hippocampus, which impairs memory. The participants seemed to forget that just ate and wanted to eat again. According to scientists, these results are related to the fact that consumption of fast food and other junk food disrupts appetite control and cause malfunctions in the hippocampus, a brain area that is responsible for the formation of emotions.
The researchers also found that after a week of eating foods high in fat and sugar, members considered junk food even if well fed.
“More difficult to abandon the food, on the contrary, we want to eat more and more, and this leads to more hippocampal damage,” said the researchers. And also among the known effects of eating fatty foods – obesity and diabetes.
