General description of the disease

 

Meningitis is an inflammatory disease of the lining of the spinal cord or brain caused by a bacterial or viral infection. The risk group for the disease includes children, adolescents and the elderly.

Background

Ways of infection

Airborne droplets, close contact (kiss), infection through blood, intrauterine infection or during the passage of the child through the birth canal, neglect of personal hygiene.

Types

Bacterial meningitis is provoked by group B, D, H. Influenzae, N. streptococci. meningitidis, Listeria, S. Aureus, enterobacteria, S. Pneumoniae, spirochetes, Flavobacterium meningosepticum, Acinetobacter spp. and gram-negative sticks. Viral meningitis is triggered by ECHO viruses, Coxsackie virus and type B and A viruses, mumps virus, Epstat-Warr virus, togaviruses, bunyaviruses, arenaviruses, HSV type 2, cytomegalovirus and adenovirus.

Symptoms

Fever, acute headache, pain and stiffness in the neck, nausea, vomiting, blurred consciousness, fear of light, rash, hydrocephalus (dropsy of the brain), migraine, brain tumor, cerebral edema, epidemic encephalitis, irritability, fever, drowsiness, sensitivity to the sounds.

Healthy foods for meningitis

With meningitis, food should be taken in small portions at least six times a day (especially during a period of temperature drop), weighing up to 400 g at a time.

A diet for meningitis should perform several functions:

  1. 1 removal of intoxication of the body, which occurs due to toxins of pathogens and protein breakdown products;
  2. 2 maintenance of metabolism, water-salt, protein and vitamin balance of the body. The diet should use easily digestible foods and dishes.

Depending on the stage of the disease and the complexity of its course, different therapeutic diets should be used. For example, in the acute course of meningitis, diet number 13 is used, with complicated meningitis – a zero diet, in case of unconsciousness of the patient – a probe diet, during the recovery period – diet number 2 and number 15, in case of depletion of the body as a result of an illness and after complete recovery – № eleven.

Among the products you can eat are:

  • steamed and mashed lean meat (veal, rabbit, chicken, turkey, jellied meat, beef jelly, boiled tongue, lean ham, liver and meat pate);
  • boiled fish or steamed fish dishes;
  • soft-boiled egg, steamed omelets or soufflé;
  • dairy products (kefir, fermented milk drinks, cottage cheese, acidophilus, kefir, yogurt, non-acidic sour cream in dishes, mild grated cheese);
  • easily digestible milk fats (cream, butter, sour cream);
  • foods with coarse fiber (pureed vegetables and fruits);
  • liquid (up to two and a half liters per day), which helps to improve metabolism and remove toxins from the body. You can drink weak tea with milk or lemon, a decoction of wheat bran or rosehip, fruit drinks, jelly, compotes, table mineral waters;
  • low-fat broths;
  • natural sweet and sour fruit juices diluted with water;
  • dried wheat bread, uncooked buns, biscuits, crackers, dry biscuit;
  • boiled or mashed porridge, boiled noodles and noodles, baked puddings, cutlets and zrazy from cereals or noodles.

Folk remedies for meningitis

  • decoctions of grass “camel hay”, barley or mint water;
  • infusion of lavender flowers (three teaspoons for two cups of boiling water);
  • infusion of valerian root water, take half a glass twice a day for two weeks;
  • poppy seeds (one tablespoon of grated poppy seeds in one glass of hot milk, insist in a thermos for 12 hours), take 70 ml one hour before meals;
  • an infusion of wormwood (three teaspoons of herbs per 30 ml of boiling water, insist for two hours wrapped well) take 50 ml 4 times a day half an hour before meals.

Dangerous and harmful foods for meningitis

You should limit the use of products such as:

  • animal fats that can cause metabolic acidosis (lamb, pork, goose, duck), smoked meats, canned food;
  • easily digestible carbohydrates (sugary drinks, jellies, mousses, honey, jams, etc.), which can cause intestinal fermentation, allergic reactions and inflammation;
  • sodium chloride (table salt) up to 10 g per day, except in cases of diarrhea, vomiting or heavy sweating.

Exclude Products:

  • fresh wheat bread, baked goods, puff pastry, pancakes, pancakes, coarse rye bread;
  • fatty fish, salted, smoked and dried fish and canned fish;
  • whole milk and ice cream;
  • buckwheat and pearl barley porridge, legumes;
  • vegetables with coarse fiber (cucumbers, turnips, radishes, peppers, radishes);
  • marinated mushrooms;
  • hard berries and fruits with coarse grains (red currants, raspberries, gooseberries, dates, figs);
  • spicy and fatty sauces, peppers, mustard, horseradish.
