“48 hours of on-call duty in front of the Sejm – we are looking at Members’ hands”. This is the slogan of a two-day demonstration by nurses and midwives, which began on June 22. The protest concerns the method of determining the lowest basic salary. See photos from the first day of the demonstration.

The manifestation was organized by the National Trade Union of Nurses and Midwives in connection with the works on the amendment to the Act on the lowest salaries in health care. The bill, after significant amendments by the Senate, has returned to the Sejm, and the protesters are demanding their adoption.
Senate amendments concern, inter alia, guarantees of financing the increases. It is about introducing a provision guaranteeing medical entities to cover the costs related to the increase in salaries of their employees as a result of the entry into force of the act.
As we read on Rynekzdrowia.pl, “nurses want the money for pay rises to be” marked “so that they cannot be used for any other purpose”. The point is “that they should be separated in the budget of the hospital, the medical entity. Because if they go to one pool of money for benefits, it may happen that employees will not get this money »explained the president of the Polish Nurses and Midwives Trade Union, Krystyna Ptok.
Another important postulate of the demonstrators is the recognition of employees’ qualifications so that they do not qualify for lower pay groups.
Protesters also support the immediate recognition of the upgrade. It is about “introducing the principle that the determination of a new salary of an employee will take place each time from the next calendar month after he has documented the fact of obtaining higher professional qualifications”.
On June 20, the Minister of Health, Adam Niedzielski, was asked about the demonstration of nurses and midwives. »First of all, I would like to tell you that no other professional group supports these opinions or the position expressed by the nurses’ union. This is a completely lonely voice »said the head of the Ministry of Health (after PAP).
«We are dealing for the first time in many, many years with an increase (remuneration – PAP) in the case of nurses in particular, who have secondary education, because under the old system they obtained their qualifications, we have an increase in remuneration and this is not a mistake – 41 percent » – pointed out Adam Niedzielski.
«Please explain to me what is the rationality of protesting if the salary is increased by 41%. and the role of (nurses) in the system is increased. It is, in my opinion, completely unjustified, although one could probably find some political justification »- assessed Niedzielski.
The Sejm Health Committee, meeting on June 22, gave a negative opinion on all Senate amendments proposed to the amendment to the act.
