Munich vacation. How to entertain. Part 1

In order not to waste a day of your cherished vacation and to have time everywhere, it is important to know what sights you should pay attention to. On a fascinating journey through Munich, Germany, we go together with Vera Stepygina.

The capital of Bavaria is a favorite place for Russian travelers to start exploring Europe. As a rule, after staying a day or two in Munich, tourists are in a hurry to continue their route towards the Alpine resorts, Italian shops or Swiss lakes. In the meantime, if not the mass, then the exciting children’s holidays and the desire to return and repeat this city is worth it. Time after time, it reveals more and more amazing, informative, beautiful and breathtaking. Almost all my trips to Munich – spring, summer, and Christmas-were accompanied by children, so I look at the city through the eyes of my mother, who is important not just to entertain, but also to tell and teach.  So, over and over again, a list of “indispensable” places for the whole family to visit has developed for me, which is annoying to pass by.  So, what should you do in Munich to spend time not only with pleasure, but also with benefit?

Visit the Frauenkirche-the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the symbol of Munich. It is unlikely that young tourists will appreciate the stories about the Gothic culture, the archbishops and the tombs of the Bavarian kings. But the legend of the devil who helps the architect in the construction of the cathedral will not leave anyone indifferent. According to legend, in exchange for support, the builder promised to build a church without a single window. The evil one was invited to the” delivery of the object ” even when the cathedral was consecrated, the devil could not get into it, and from the place where he stamped his foot in anger and left the mark of his shoe on the stone floor, indeed, not a single window is visible – they are hidden by side columns. Climb up to one of the towers of the cathedral – appreciate Munich from the height of its tallest building. Interestingly, not so long ago, the Bavarians decided never to erect buildings in the city above 99 meters, the height of the Fraunkirche.

Take a walk in the English Garden. In good weather, be sure to go for a walk in one of the most beautiful and largest urban parks in the world (more famous Central and Hyde Parks) – the English Garden. Be prepared to answer the children’s question – why the park in the Bavarian capital is called “English”.  To do this, you do not need to be a great connoisseur of landscape architecture. Just tell us that the “English style”, in contrast to the symmetrical, regular-shaped” French ” gardens, is a natural beauty, a natural landscape that creates a complete feeling that you are not in the center of the city, but far beyond it.   Do not forget to stock up on a bun to feed the numerous swans and ducks, as well as the enthusiasm and strength to visit the most interesting places of the garden – a Japanese tea house, a Chinese tower, a Greek pavilion, a stream with a natural wave, where surfers from all over the world train. You can end your visit to the park with a romantic, leisurely boat ride on the lake, or a more prosaic, but no less pleasant pastime in one of the five beer pavilions of the park-dad also needs to develop.

Remember your childhood in the toy museum. On the main square of Munich, Marienplatz, at twelve in the afternoon and five in the evening, an incredible number of people gather with their heads up. All of them are looking forward to the building of the “new” town hall. It is at this time that the main city clock “comes to life” to tell about the events that Marienplatz witnessed many centuries ago – weddings of nobles, jousting tournaments, the celebration of the end of the plague. After a 15-minute performance, do not rush to leave the square, but turn right – right in the old town hall is a small, cozy and very touching toy museum. It makes no sense to describe in detail the exhibits of this chamber collection – everyone, both adults and children, will find something to be surprised, touched, and happy about. Tin soldiers, vintage Barbies, Teddy bears, dollhouses, railroads, and much, much more.  But those whose childhood fell on the seventies, will certainly pinch the heart in front of a showcase with the dream of any Soviet child, objects of lust and envy-clockwork robots. And don’t try to explain to your children why this robot is a thousand times better and more desirable than an iPad. To do this, you will have to tell about a lot of things, including green bananas maturing on the cabinet in a box from under my mother’s boots.

Lose your head in the German Museum. The largest polytechnic museum in the world is the Deutsches Museum in Munich. And don’t expect to bypass it entirely on your first visit. Even if you are completely indifferent to the mechanisms, devices, engines, models of the universe and submarines in the context, there is certainly a room in which you want to stay longer. What should you stock up on when going to the German Museum with your children? Ideally – at least a school physics course. But if it is safely buried in the most distant corners of memory, then there will be enough comfortable shoes, patience and an extra hundred euros – there are so many delicious things and near-scientific nonsense in the museum store that you will not notice how you will fill a basket full of “for yourself, for a friend, for a teacher, for another friend and I will think of someone”. The most intrepid, self-denying parents may admit that the huge building on the banks of the Isar, where you spent six hours today – is not the whole museum. That in the nature and accessibility of the metro there are still its branches, one dedicated to aeronautics and aviation, the other with an exposition of all kinds of transport – cars, trains, “everything that transports us”. If you have a task to entertain both the boy and the girl-send the son with the father to further development of museum spaces. For girls in Munich, there are more interesting entertainment.  About them-later.
