Agnes Gonje Boyajiu at age 18 (1928)

Mother Teresa devoted her whole life to the poor and sick, and created orphanages. She opened houses of mercy and hospices, and sought the construction of schools and clinics.

She spent her childhood and adolescence in a large and wealthy family, in an atmosphere of love and goodwill. She lived in a wealthy house, received a Catholic education, studied at a secular school and a state lyceum.

But to her surprise, Agnes dreamed of devoting herself to monastic service. At the age of 12, the girl thought about how she would help the poor in India. When she was eighteen years old, she went to Ireland. There Agnes joined the monastic order of the Irish Sisters of Loreto.

In 1931 she was tonsured and took the name Teresa in honor of the Carmelite nun, canonized in 1927, known for her kindness, compassion and mercy. Soon the order sends Teresa to Calcutta (India). A childhood dream come true! The thought is material.

Mother Teresa is a laureate of the Nobel Peace Prize “For her work to help a suffering person”.
