The first varieties of melons were grown in Central Asia. Modern fruits are cultivated all over the world. For a temperate climate, special varieties have been bred with short ripening periods.

Melons are usually classified according to their place of growth. There are Uzbek and Turkmen melons, as well as people from Africa, India and China. These sweet fruits can be ripening at different times.

Different varieties of melons differ in the color of the pulp

There are several groups of melons, depending on the growing season:

  • ultra-ripe – less than 60 days;
  • early ripening – 60-70 days;
  • mid-season – 75-100 days;
  • late – 95-100 days;
  • winter – the latest varieties that can be stored for a long time.

The varieties bred for cold regions are short-ripening varieties. During this period, you need to prepare the seedlings and plant them in the greenhouse.

Names of the best melon varieties for temperate climates

The sweetest melons can certainly only be grown under the hot sun. Melons of temperate climates have different flavor nuances. To choose a variety for growing, it is worth learning about the middle lane hybrids and reviews about them.

The following melons have good properties for growing in garden plots of the Moscow Region:

  • “Aikido F1” is a mid-early hybrid, not susceptible to powdery mildew. The fruit reaches a weight of 2,0 kg. This melon can be grown outdoors. The delicate flesh has a light green tint.
  • “Princess Svetlana F1” – early ripening variety: ripening period is about 70 days. It tolerates cold and rain well. The melon is resistant to powdery mildew, yields 6,5 kg per 1 m².
  • “Tamanskaya” is an ultra-early variety – 55−80 days. It is unpretentious and has good taste. Fruits are yellow, elongated, weighing up to 1,3 kg.
  • “Evdokia” is a melon with a short ripening period. It can be grown outdoors under plastic. It tolerates temperature changes well. The fruits are round, with orange flesh and sweet.
  • “Zolotistaya” is a mid-season variety, disease-resistant and unpretentious. It tolerates transportation well and can be stored for a long time. Fruits weighing 1,5-2 kg. The pulp is sweet and aromatic.
  • Pineapple is a mid-season variety that reaches full maturity in 80–90 days. The oblong fruit has a pinkish flesh with a delicate taste and aroma of pineapple.
  • “Amal” is an ultra-early variety with an elongated shape. Disease resistant. Its weight can reach 3-4 kg. Up to 1 kg of fruit can be harvested from 14 m². The flesh of this melon is transparent and aromatic.
  • “Fairy Tale” is an early variety. Disease resistant. Easily tolerates temperature changes. Fruits 1,2-1,6 kg. The pulp is firm, white, sweet.
  • “Canaria” is an early variety with an elongated shape. Its weight can be up to 3 kg. The pulp is light green with a melon-honey aroma. The rind is thin.

These melons are specially formulated for temperate climates and can be harvested in a short summer. Seeds for seedlings should be planted no earlier than April, since melons grow quickly.

There is such a variety of cold-tolerant hybrids that melon can be grown even in Siberia. The main thing is not to grab hold of capricious heat-loving beauties who need bright sun and high temperature.
