People who smoke marijuana are more likely to develop pre-diabetes, warn researchers from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. However, the reasons for this phenomenon remain a mystery to scholars.
The study covered over 3 Americans aged 30-40. His results showed that those who currently smoke marijuana had pre-diabetes by 65%. more often than in the control group. On the other hand, in those who did not reach for “twists” anymore, but earlier, in the course of their lives, burned more than 100 of them – this type of sugar problems was 49 percent. more frequent than in the control group.
The described dependence occurred after taking into account the influence of such factors as BMI or waist circumference.
However, as Health’s Mike Bancks, lead author points out, no relationship has been found between marijuana smoking and type 2 diabetes. Scientists are yet unable to explain this phenomenon. One possible explanation could be that those who used marijuana the most frequently were excluded from the study. The relatively young age of the participants is also noteworthy. However, the hypothesis that marijuana raises blood glucose only up to a certain level and does not actually lead to the development of diabetes cannot be rejected.
Pre-diabetes can lead to diabetes within a few years (about 10% of people with pre-diabetes develop the disease in just one year). It is important to know that pre-diabetes is not a disease in itself and does not require treatment. In order to reduce the risk of developing diabetes, however, it is necessary to change the lifestyle (it is recommended, among others, to change the diet, including lowering calories and including products with a low glycemic index and a large dose of exercise).
