For more than 40 years, since 1975, International Women’s Day has been celebrated by the United Nations, and in Our Country, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, and Turkmenistan, March 8 is a national holiday.
history of the holiday
On February 28, 1908, more than 15 women took to the streets in New York to demand a reduction in working hours and equal wages with men. A year later, the Socialist Party of America declared the last Sunday of February to be National Women’s Day. And a year later, American representatives came to the Second International Conference of Socialist Women in Copenhagen, where they met the communist Clara Zetkin, who proposed making Women’s Day international.
In 1911, one of the leaders of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, Elena Grinberg, proposed that International Women’s Day be celebrated in Germany, Austria, Denmark and Switzerland on March 19 in honor of the March Revolution of 1848 in POur Country. In 1913, women also took part in the processions in France and Our Country, the Czech Republic, Hungary and other countries. Moreover, the events were held on different days of March. In 1914, it was decided to celebrate Women’s Day on Sunday, which fell on the 8th. On this day, ladies from the USA, Great Britain, Austria, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Our Country and Switzerland joined the action.
In 1921, the 2nd Communist Women’s Conference was held in the USSR, which decided to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8 – in honor of the Petrograd demonstration that took place on that day (February 23, old style) in 1917.
In 1965, the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR was issued, according to which International Women’s Day on March 8 became a holiday and a day off.
What is celebrated on International Women’s Day
Since 1975, the United Nations has celebrated March 8 as the International Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace, declaring a specific theme each year. In addition, in Our Country and some other countries this holiday is also a national holiday. On this day, women from different countries and continents come together to discuss the level of their struggle for equality, peace and justice.
In our country, March 8 is still called International Women’s Day, but it is perceived more as a spring holiday, when every woman is waiting for attention and care from her beloved men. Representatives of the stronger sex get the opportunity to please their dear ladies not only with flowers and gifts, but also with pleasant words and time spent together.
Holiday traditions
On a beautiful spring holiday, it is customary to invite women for walks and dates. Every year, Moscow parks offer many ideas for celebrating March 8th. Historical excursions, holiday concerts, workshops on making gifts with your own hands, various photo zones and “Open Mic” places where you can congratulate women aloud – there are options for everyone.
If outdoor walks do not suit you, or the weather on this day is not good, then concert halls traditionally hold these special programs. Performances by men’s groups, musicals and congratulatory concerts are the invariable components of International Women’s Day.
Working women usually receive gifts and attention from male colleagues and superiors. In addition, it is customary to congratulate their teachers, grandmothers and other female acquaintances.
Gifts for March 8
On the eve of International Women’s Day, almost every man thinks about how to please his loved ones. Sociologists came to the rescue, who conducted a survey and found out the rating of gifts that women dream of.
In the first place (43% of respondents) were jewelry. On the second line (34%) – cosmetics and perfumery. And the top three of this top were closed by certificates and gift cards of various stores, as well as household appliances (especially for beauty, and not for the kitchen).
In addition, flowers remain a universal gift.
