Lidocaine – action, purpose, interactions with other drugs

Lidocaine is a substance derived from acetanilide. It is used in drugs with a local anesthetic effect. It can be administered in the form of a gel and an aerosol, as well as an injection solution.

Lidocaine – action

Lidocaine is bi-directional. It can be used as a local anesthetic. An antiarrhythmic drug from group Ib (according to the Vaughan Williams classification) is also used, contributing, inter alia, to to reduce cardiac automatism.

Lidocaine – destiny

The indications for the use of lidocaine are:

  1. ventricular arrhythmias manifested, inter alia, in ventricular tachycardia, premature ventricular contractions,
  2. prevention of ventricular fibrillation after a recent heart attack,
  3. local anesthesia.

Lidocaine – contraindications to use

Drugs containing lidocaine can not be used in all patients. Contraindications are: hypersensitivity to amide local anesthetics.

Lidocaine – warnings

Warnings for administering drugs with lidocaine:

  1. caution should be exercised in the case of advanced intraventricular block, shock, severe kidney and liver damage, myasthenia gravis, epilepsy,
  2. during breastfeeding, the drug should be used very carefully.

Lidocaine – drug interactions

Lidocaine may interact with other medications, such as:

  1. antiarrhythmic drugs,
  2. inhalation anesthetics,
  3. cimetidine,
  4. norepinefryna,
  5. β-blockers,
  6. striated muscle relaxants,
  7. ryfampicyna,
  8. barbiturany,
  9. as phenytoin.

Before using a drug containing lidocaine, inform your doctor about all preparations you are taking – including those obtained without a prescription.

Lidocaine – side effects

Lidocaine is a substance that can cause certain side effects:

  1. central nervous system: lightheadedness, tongue numbness, drowsiness, respiratory arrest, dizziness;
  2. circulatory system: conduction disturbances, bradycardia, ventricular fibrillation, hypotension, cardiac arrest.

Possible complications after local anesthesia include: weakness or paralysis of the lower limbs, paraesthesia, dysfunction of the sphincters.
