Leakage of water during pregnancy: how to determine the signs of leakage

Leakage of water during pregnancy is dangerous for the health of the mother and baby. Normally, the discharge of water occurs at the 36-40th week, and the early outpouring of the liquid that protects the child from external negative influences is considered a pathology. Leakage of water is diagnosed by a gynecologist when examining a pregnant woman or taking a smear on the flora.

Only a gynecologist can determine the leakage of water during pregnancy

The amniotic fluid (amniotic fluid) inside the fetal bladder has several functions. It protects the child from external influences and pathogenic organisms, allows him to move freely. This sterile environment is also involved in the nutrition of the baby.

The reasons for water leakage are:

  • Gynecological diseases: cervicitis, colpitis;
  • multiple pregnancies;
  • suffered abdominal injuries;
  • lifting weights;
  • ICI (isthmic-cervical insufficiency of the cervix).

Why is the leakage of water dangerous for the child and the mother? Outpouring of amniotic fluid provokes premature birth, infection of both the mother and the fetus with various infectious diseases, oxygen starvation and the death of the child.

For a period of up to 22 weeks, with a strong leakage of amniotic fluid, pregnancy is not maintained. At a later date, the woman is prescribed antibacterial drugs and drugs to accelerate the growth of the child, and then stimulate labor.

Signs of water leakage during pregnancy

Leakage of amniotic fluid is not asymptomatic. The first thing to look for is vaginal discharge, sipping or soreness in the lower abdomen. During pregnancy, there may be an increase in normal physiological secretions that do not require the attention of a doctor.

But if you see a small amount of transparent, pinkish, greenish or brown liquid on the pad or underwear, you should immediately contact your gynecologist. Only a doctor can accurately determine the leakage of water during pregnancy.

Amniotic fluid with rupture of the membranes can:

  • To pour out more intensely during physical activity;
  • leak little by little, raising suspicions of urinary incontinence.

Amniotic fluid can leak in minimal amounts without making itself felt. In this case, ultrasound and a smear from the vagina on the flora will help to determine the dangerous condition. Medical research is being carried out in a hospital setting.

You can independently determine the leakage of water using a special test strip, which is sold in pharmacies. But, according to doctors, home remedies for amniotic fluid leakage sometimes give a false positive or false negative result.

If you feel that your stomach has become smaller, in addition to physiological secretions, you feel the outflow of amniotic fluid, you need to contact an ambulance. This will protect you and your child from possible negative consequences.
