Sealing furrows: how to protect our children’s teeth?
Despite regular and twice-daily brushing, eight out of ten cavities form in the furrows (the hollow of the inner face) molars, simply because the bristles of the toothbrush cannot penetrate all the way to the bottom of the wells where food debris and the bacteria responsible for cavities take refuge. Sealing the furrows therefore makes it possible to “anticipate” decay by protecting the tooth.bacterial attacks. According to an American study (country where the sealing of furrows has become commonplace), this operation allowed a 50% decrease in the incidence of cavities.
How to remove the risk of cavities between the teeth?
The furrows are sealed by the dental surgeon, without anesthesia (it is absolutely not painful!). The intervention consists of close the cracks from the inside of the tooth using a polymer resin, which acts a bit like a protective “varnish”. The only requirement: that the tooth is perfectly healthy. The sealing then lasts several years but the child must still visit your dentist every six months, to ensure that the resin does not wear out or peel off.
When to make an appointment with the dentist for a dental furrow seal?
The first permanent molars appear around 6 years old : these were not preceded by milk teeth and grow discreetly behind the premolars. From this age, you can make an appointment with the dentist for a furrow seal, especially since the intervention is reimbursed by Social Security ! The second molars appear around 11-12 years old, but it will take 18 years for your child to see his permanent third molars, also called “wisdom teeth”.
