Glass and glass ceramics are very practical materials. Even serious contaminants are removed from their surface in just one movement. Unless in some cases it will be necessary to leave the dishes soaked for several hours (or even a day).
If this time is not available, we have collected some useful tips on how to wash glassware from any dirt to a shine, and quickly.
How to clean cloudy glassware
Glassware can become cloudy over time. This is due to micro-scratches on its surface, the formation of mineral deposits, improper washing and insufficient rinsing. To clean such cutlery, ordinary detergent is not enough.
But you can use other proven options:
Ammonia. 1 teaspoon of this solvent is added to 1 liter of water at room temperature. Then glassware is sent to this solution for soaking. The duration of the process depends on the degree of contamination, and is usually 20-30 minutes. After soaking, the dishes are washed in the same solution. You don’t need to rinse it, but wipe it dry with a flannel cloth – yes. The method is effective for any contamination – from stubborn fat to caked crusts and cloudy deposits;
Salt. Prepare its solution in warm water. The proportions are arbitrary, usually 1-2 teaspoons per liter of liquid is enough. Dip the dishes into the solution and leave to soak for 5-30 minutes, depending on the degree of contamination. After that, rinse the glass objects in the solution, rinse gently and do not wipe, let it dry naturally. The method is also effective against any pollution and turbidity;
Table vinegar 9%. Prepare its solution in warm water. For 1 liter of liquid, add 1 tablespoon of vinegar. Immerse the dishes in the prepared solution for 15-20 minutes. Then rinse with a sponge soaked in this liquid and rinse under running water. The method is particularly effective against mineral deposits caused, for example, by frequent washing in hard water.
The most effective solvent for contaminants of any type is ammonia. However, it is required to wash dishes in it only in a well-ventilated area.
You can also mix ammonia and toothpaste to a soft pulp. With this product, you can wipe stubborn dirt, effectively removing them from the surface of glassware. The toothpaste also has a mild abrasive action, which results in a fine polishing of the surface.
Work with ammonia, salt and vinegar must be carried out only with protective gloves. Optionally, you can also wear a respirator and goggles. This will help to avoid irritation on the skin and mucous membranes.
How to wash stubborn and stuck dirt from glassware
Stubborn stains are the most difficult to remove, especially those that have stuck. They appear, for example, if something was baked in a glass dish, but this dish was burnt. Even the long-term soaking method can be ineffective.
Fortunately, there are other ways to wash glassware from stubborn and stuck stains:
Salt. Moisten the stain (spot). And then – generously sprinkle it with salt and leave for 30-60 minutes. During this time, the stain will collapse, and it can be removed with a regular sponge with a small amount of detergent;
Mustard. Add mustard powder to warm water at the rate of 1 teaspoon per liter. Stir until dissolved. Use gloves as mustard powder is quite caustic and can damage the skin on your hands. Dip the dishes in the solution and leave it for 30-60 minutes. Then wash the glass as usual and rinse with water. This method is well suited for removing greasy stains, including stubborn ones;
Soda. Sprinkle a damp sponge with a pinch of this substance and try to wash the dishes as usual. Do not try to press hard – baking soda is abrasive and can scratch the surface. To combat large and old stains, another option is also suitable. Pollution must be moistened, and then sprinkled with plenty of soda and left for a while. The alkali will corrode the stain, and it can be washed off with a sponge;
Food foil. A sheet of aluminum foil for baking (or chocolate) needs to be crumpled and rubbed with dirt. This metal is quite soft and therefore does not scratch the glass, unlike special steel sponges. After cleaning, it is required to rinse the dishes first in soapy water (with baby soap), and then under a running stream to avoid streaks.
You can also sprinkle the stain with lemon juice and leave for a while. But this is a classic way, universal for any dishes and known to all housewives.
When using any concentrated or caustic solutions – salt, mustard, soda – you must protect your hands with rubber gloves. This will help prevent inflammation and other dermatological problems. In addition, all these substances penetrate wounds (even small ones, like pimples) and cause acute pain.
How to clean glass bottles and carafes
Old dirt inside dishes with a narrow neck – glass bottles, decanters, cylinders, cans – can be washed with special brushes. But, if such an accessory was not found on the farm, improvised means are also suitable:
Eggshell. It must be dried and crushed to a state of coarse powder. Then pour inside the bottle and add shavings of household or baby soap. Fill with warm water. After that, you will need to carefully shake the bottle for several minutes – until your hands get tired, and then a little more. Pour the mixture, rinse the dishes, repeat if necessary;
Potatoes. Grate the raw root crop on a medium or large grater. Pour the puree into a bottle, if necessary, add a little water. And then – shake the dishes again for several minutes until your hands get tired. Pour the mixture, rinse the bottle, repeat if necessary. At the end, you need to rinse very thoroughly.
By the way, grated potatoes can also be used simply to remove dirt from the surface of glassware. The gruel from this root crop needs to be distributed over the stain and left for a while. Rinse the dishes, however, you need to be especially careful – starch tends to stick to the walls and form plaque.
