How To Soak Onions And Other Seeds Before Planting

For maximum germination of greens, legumes and melons, you may even need milk.

Spring exercise in the garden continues. Potatoes, if not yet planted, are preparing to go to the beds. Seedlings of tomatoes, peppers, zucchini and cabbage are raging on the windowsill and waiting for planting in the open ground. And in the very near future we need to prepare the rest of the seeds for planting. To do this, like the Cinderellas, you need to sort the seeds into fruitful and empty ones, treat the seed with disinfecting drugs. And soak – this will increase the speed of growing a high-quality crop.

Bow

If you decide to plant seeds (nigella) of onions to get sets for the next year, then use a simple advice. Pour the nigella into a glass of warm water of 40-45 degrees, add a few drops of aloe juice and hold for half an hour. Then, after drying, sow in a container. After a few weeks, in cloudy weather, the seedlings can be planted in the garden at a distance of 15 cm from each other. Cut thin roots and feathers in half in advance. By the fall, you will receive the necessary seed for planting next year.

If you want to get onions this year, then it is better to use onion sets purchased in the store. There are many recipes for soaking onion sets. We offer the most versatile. But you need to remember two rules: the bulbs must be warmed up and disinfected before sowing. To warm up the sevok, right on the day of planting, we lower it into water heated to 45-50 ℃. You can add either soda, or salt, or potassium permanganate to the water (to a rich pink color). We wrap the container with the solution and onions in a warm blanket and hold for 15 minutes. Then we dry the sevok for a couple of hours in the sun and plant it.

Cucumber, squash, pumpkin

It is necessary to “wake up” the sprouts in order to shorten the period of time from sowing to the first shoots. In addition, it will be possible to reject low-quality seed – the unhatched seeds will only have to be thrown away. The seeds are soaked in wet gauze, in which the seeds are placed. The fabric is covered with a plastic bag and placed in a dark place. Being warm and damp, the seeds open in about a day or two. Do not forget to moisten the gauze and ventilate the “greenhouse” by lifting the film of the bag.

Some gardeners argue that for express planting, it is enough to dip the seeds in high-quality vodka (without impurities) for 10-15 minutes, rinse and, after drying, sow into the ground.

Parsley

She is known for her long life. The grass seeds are coated with essential oils that slow down their germination. To accelerate germination, parsley can be soaked in whole milk (which is stored for no more than three days) with a high percentage of fat. A pasteurized or ghee product will not work.

The seeds are poured into a shallow dish, poured with a small amount of warm milk and covered with cling film. After 10-12 hours, the milk must be drained until it sour. The seeds do not need to be washed. After drying, they are ready for sowing.

Dill

The chamomile infusion helps to wash away the essential oils from the seed coat. It is important that the solution is not hotter than 50 degrees, otherwise the embryos of the planting material may die. Pour a tablespoon of dry chamomile with boiling water, let it cool. In a gauze bag, immerse the dill seeds in the infusion for half an hour. Take it out, dry it a little.

Radish

To get a juicy vegetable in the shortest possible time, the radish seeds must be soaked right before planting. To do this, they are left for 8-12 hours either in plain water or in stimulating solutions. To disinfect the seed, it is placed in hot water at a temperature of 50-55 degrees for 20 minutes. They extract, cool, sow.

Carrots

Oddly enough, but very small carrot seeds also need to be sorted and soaked. You can recognize fruitful seeds with the help of a saline solution: dissolve one teaspoon of salt in a glass of water, throw the seeds into the solution and after some time remove the floating empty grains. Rinse the rest, place in cheesecloth and fill with spring or settled water for a day.

Beetroot

Without air, this seed will not germinate, so it does not need to be kept in water. Take a 1 liter container, add half a tablespoon of baking soda and keep the seeds in the solution for only an hour and a half. Then place the pellets on a small piece of damp cloth, on which they will germinate.

beans

It is difficult for sprouts to break through the dense rind of the grains. They need help by placing them in a colander. Gauze is placed on the bottom of the dish, then first-class beans in three layers. Cover with a piece of cloth on top. Rinse and moisten the legumes several times a day until the sprouts hatch. It may take a day or two.

Peas

Dry peas absorb up to 200% of their own weight of water. Such a moisture reserve is difficult to accumulate in the soil. To soak and at the same time disinfect a fruitful seed, you can use (as for many seeds) boric acid: 1 gram of boric acid is diluted in 5 liters of water. The seeds are kept in solution for no more than 25 minutes.

What seeds do not need to be soaked

Seed material, which is covered with a colored shell, must be sown dry. Wet soil is sufficient for such seeds. The fact is that with the help of the shell, the producer protects the seeds from diseases and enriches each seed with useful minerals. When soaking, the entire treatment will simply be washed off.
