How to properly wash sneakers: tips, tricks, rules

This beautiful shoe has only one drawback: it gets dirty, and it is much more difficult to restore it to its original appearance than leather boots.

The current fashion, fortunately, allows you to wear sneakers not only to the gym, but anywhere – with skirts, dresses, shorts, and everyone in a row. It’s amazingly convenient! Hence the problem: how to quickly get rid of dirt and terrible stains during washing, not damage the appearance of your favorite shoes and at the same time remain satisfied with the result. How to properly wash your sneakers?

Initially, it is important to know which shoes can be thrown into the washer and which ones will have to be washed by hand. Only sewn shoes can be machine washed. If your sneakers are glued, then at the finish line you may find that the top of the sneaker or sneaker now has a life of its own, separate from the sole.

Textile upper? Remember that colored textiles can shed and stain plain fabrics. Therefore, you will have to wash each type of sneaker separately – moreover, it is much more humane in relation to the machine.

Shoes with Velcro, reflective or luminous elements are also not suitable for machine washing, as such parts may fail. Well, if your shoes are made of suede, then washing them is strictly prohibited.

Before washing, be sure to clean shoes from dust with a dry brush. Then we wash it off the dirt under running water, and with a brush or a toothpick we remove from the protectors all kinds of small objects (pebbles, stuck twigs, etc.) that can ruin the machine.

To get rid of the unpleasant odor of your shoes and wash them off faster, soak them in soapy water for 20-25 minutes. We take out the insoles from the shoes, which can be deformed from such a procedure, as well as the laces (it is better to wash these accessories by hand) and put the shoes in a special mesh bag for washing.

We remember an important detail: we put in the machine no more than two pairs of shoes at the same time. In addition to sneakers, be sure to put old towels or unnecessary things in the machine that will soften the impact on the drum and keep the parts of your miracle machine intact.

Washing without spinning and drying

Before starting to wash, select the mode. In modern automatic machines for this purpose, there is a special program “for sports shoes”. If it is not available, a delicate or hand wash will do. We set the water temperature to 30-40 degrees. Unfortunately, at higher temperatures there is a chance that some parts will simply come off. And in order to exclude various troubles in the form of deformation of shoes, be sure to turn off the spinning and drying modes.

If you decide to wash your sneakers by hand, we stock up with a basin of water, improvised detergents and, of course, time. After soaking, we change the dirty water to clean water, add not only detergents, but also stain removers, bleaches, remove heavily soiled areas with a brush and again immerse the sneakers in a soapy solution for a few minutes. We do this manipulation several times until the water becomes clear. After that, the sneakers must be rinsed.

And do not try to push: you need to wipe off the dirt very gently so as not to damage your beloved couple. The material of the sneakers can be easily scratched or rubbed off – instead of being clean, we get an untidy look.

Newspaper or electric dryer

No shoes can be dried on a radiator or heater, as they are easily deformed, and some parts may come off altogether. If the sneaker is white, there is a chance that the surface will be covered with yellow stains.

Did you wash your shoes in an automatic machine? Then, after washing, immediately turn off the spin mode, as spinning can deform the shoes.

Until recently, sneakers were dried using newspaper, which was stuffed tightly inside. As soon as it became wet, it was changed to the next dry batch. You can still use this method today, just do not forget that if your sneakers are snow-white, the printing ink will leave its marks on them, and you will have to wash everything again. Therefore, for this grandmother’s way, it is better to use white paper or regular toilet paper.

But for lovers of new technologies, modern electric dryers are suitable, which will do all the necessary work overnight. If you are too lazy to do anything, then put the shoes to dry in a well-ventilated area or in the fresh air until they dry completely naturally.

How else to save sneakers

  • The elastic on the toe of the sneaker is perfectly wiped off by the nail polish remover.

  • Leather and even cloth shoes can be rubbed with a cotton pad dipped in micellar water – it perfectly removes dirt. But remember to first remove the dust with a dry brush or cloth.

  • It is good to clean suede shoes with a special brush for suede and nubuck: on one side of it there are rubber bristles, on the other there is a hard nap, and you can try to gently rub the scratches with an eraser.
