How long to cook peas?

Split peas (halved peas) does not require soaking, it is placed in cold water and boiled for an hour in a saucepan with an open lid. However, for complete boil-over, it is better to soak the split peas for 10-12 hours.

Whole peas (round peas) much harder, it must be soaked for 10-12 hours, and then cooked for 1-2 hours.

How to cook whole peas?

It will take – 1 cup peas (about 200 grams), 4-6 cups cold water


 
  • Peas must be sorted and washed before boiling. It is very important to rinse peas, as pebbles are often found. If one gets on a tooth, you won’t end up with problems. Together with the pebbles, we remove dubious and wrinkled peas.
  • It is better to soak any peas in water (so that the water completely covers the peas), whole peas – 4-10 hours. Fill the peas with water with a supply – and add more after a couple of hours if the peas absorb it. If it’s cool, you can leave the peas to soak on the table, but if it’s hot, put them in the refrigerator so as not to ferment.
  • As you can see in the photo, peas doubled when soaked. Now you need to carefully rinse it and drain the water. The peas will be boiled in fresh water.
  • Pour the peas with water to the top of the pot and put on fire.
  • When boiling peas, foam is formed, and there is a lot of it – you need to remove it with a spoon or slotted spoon, and carefully monitor the fire – you should slightly increase it, the foam will flood the stove.
  • You need to cook the peas on the quietest heat under a slightly open lid for 1-2 hours. You can’t say more precisely, since a lot depends on the specific harvest, dry season, the period after the cereal harvest, and so on. It is imperative to try the peas for softness and mellowness, and be sure to monitor the water level – the water should constantly cover the peas. In our case, we added water 2 times and boiled the peas for 2 hours – 1,5 in a saucepan, and then added to the soup and cooked for another half hour. The peas were boiled, but not completely boiled – the grains were separate.
  • That’s all, at the end of cooking, it remains only to salt the peas – half a teaspoon of salt without a slide is quite enough. As you can see, the peas increased almost 3 times as they soaked and cooked. More precisely, exactly three times, since peas require mandatory sampling – it is these few grams that are not visible on the scales. ?

Your peas are cooked! You can make pea puree or pea porridge from it.

How to cook split peas?

The essence is exactly the same as when cooking whole peas. It is only a little easier to cook it – soaking and cooking for a short time, besides, the result is more predictable: if whole peas can be cooked for 1,5 hours and remain firm, then split peas with a high degree of probability will boil down into porridge.

  • First, think about how many peas you need. For a large saucepan of soup or for 2 large portions, 1 mug is quite enough (in the photo, a standard Ikeevsky one) – this is 250 grams of peas.
  • As with whole peas, it is important to sprinkle the split peas on a flat surface and inspect carefully to remove any pebbles and debris. In our case, it turned out to be quite a lot.
  • Split peas do not need to be soaked, they will boil like that. But if you need to boil the peas into porridge, it’s still better to soak them – we soaked them for 12 hours, as we then added them to the soup.
  • Here is the result of a 12-hour soak – the peas have increased in volume, the plate was barely enough.
  • Put the peas on the stove – after soaking, they will cook pretty quickly.
  • Peas foam very strongly, so it is worth closely monitoring the level of fire and foam, reducing them in time.
  • After an hour of boiling, the peas are boiled and completely boiled in mashed potatoes. It is not possible to rinse it from the remaining liquid, which is why the figure on the scales is so large. In fact, split peas, just like whole peas, have increased exactly three times.

Cooking time for peas in gadgets

In the multivariate boil split peas without soaking for 1 hour on the “Stew” mode, with soaking – 45 minutes, whole peas – with soaking for 1,5 hours.

In the microwave (only split peas): Soak the peas, then rinse and cover with water, cook in the microwave at 500 watts for 20 minutes, then stir and cook for another 20 minutes at the same power, then cover the dish and cook for another 15 minutes.

In a pressure cooker boil split peas for 15 minutes, whole peas – 30 minutes + soaking.

The variety of peas, its age and water hardness are very important – be sure to taste the peas before the end of cooking, the cooking time for low-grade peas, if it is an old cereal – up to 4 hours.

How to cook peas faster

When cooking, you can add a quarter teaspoon of soda (for 1 glass of peas) – then the crushed peas will be cooked in 40 minutes, whole peas without soaking – in two.

If you are sure of the high quality of chopped peas, you can add peas for the soup immediately when cooking the meat – then the peas do not have to be soaked and can be cooked immediately in the broth for 1,5 hours.

Recipe for Pea Porridge

Soak peas for 10 hours, wash and boil.

Chop the boiled peas with a blender, add cream, bring to a boil, season with salt and cook for another 10 minutes over low heat.

Peel the onions and carrots, free the bell peppers from seeds and stalks. Finely chop the onion, grate the carrots, chop the pepper. Fry onions in a frying pan, then add carrots and peppers, fry everything together, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes.

Serve the pea porridge with the fried vegetables on top. You can also add lard, bacon, stew, minced meat to the frying.
