How Instagram makes us beautiful

Or why we are unhappy with ourselves and start to have complexes because of our appearance.

Instagram for most people has become not just an application, but life: when we wake up, the first thing we do is scroll the feed, and not kiss our beloved, leaf through Stories instead of enjoying the sunrise. The popular social network has taken over all our free time so much that we start to break down if we haven’t logged into the app for more than 20 minutes.

The real problem with Instagram is that this harmless network causes a huge number of complexes. According to a survey of members of the British Royal Society of Health, Instagram is an application that negatively affects the human psyche and even causes depression.

And this is not surprising, because, looking at the ideal, retouched pictures of bloggers, many began to think: “Why don’t I look the same?” Not everyone thinks about the fact that opinion leaders often take pictures after visiting a makeup artist and stylist. Because of this, ordinary people begin to doubt themselves and their attractiveness.

Nowadays it is very difficult to imagine a truly natural photo in the feed. After all, haters do not sleep. As soon as some celebrity or popular blogger uploads a photo without makeup, tons of negative comments are poured on them. Followers are ready to make fun of their own idols for the slightest flaw.

That is why there is a lot of work behind every selfie: styling, makeup, careful selection of bows.

Of course, this is not without a huge number of video tutorials from beauty bloggers, who tell in detail what you need to do to be beautiful in Instagram pictures. And if makeup did not help to disguise imperfections, then Facetune will come to the rescue – an application that can even out the tone of the face, make eyelashes long, lips plump, cheekbones chiseled. And it doesn’t matter that you will no longer look like yourself. Does anyone care about this, the main thing is to look beautiful in the picture.

Ekaterina Fedorova, top-class psychologist, author of training seminars and books, director of the women’s training center:

Women compete with each other for beauty as much as men for leadership and success. Instagram is a convenient platform for self-presentation. The possibilities of Photoshop allow you to hide flaws and adjust the body as you wish. You can easily enlarge your lips, change the shape of your eyes, and even add abs cubes.

However, it is not social media that makes women look beautiful, but the instinct for dominance. I want to be the best and take a more advantageous position in society or next to a worthy man. When one trophy is conquered, a new one appears on the horizon, which again requires self-presentation. And where else, if not in a public network, you can win an audience of thousands in the shortest possible time ?! Fitonyashki dictate beauty standards, which are certainly picked up and scattered with lightning speed to other accounts. Therefore, we often find similar female images in different profiles.
