Household non-chemicals: how to replace your funds with environmentally friendly
Resident of the ecovillage Maria Dokukina talks about her experience of replacing everyday hygiene products with those that do not harm the environment.
The dishes in our family were always washed with a special terribly-well-foaming dishwashing detergent, the sink was cleaned with a super-whitening-non-scratching gel, the armpits were smeared with a non-streak-on-black deodorant and washed, you know, with a washing-all- even-better-boiling superpowder. That’s how it is in advertising, and everyone else does it. I didn’t think about the benefits or dangers of such a set of household chemicals to my beloved and the environment.
By coincidence, having matured, I already with my own family moved from the urban jungle to live in an ecovillage right in the middle of the forest. One of the rules is to refuse household chemicals that are harmful to the environment (which means you and your whole family too). You are probably now thinking: well, how can you live without my favorite shampoo that makes hair silky? Or without the refreshing-and-dazzling-whitening toothpaste to make your smile irresistible? Yes Yes. And I thought so. But, to my surprise, all of these remedies were found to be safe, even useful substitutes. So about the personal experience of switching to environmentally friendly cleanliness and beauty products, point by point.
Crystal instead of deodorant
A friend of mine introduced me to a transparent, like glass, pebble about four years ago. I remember how she said that he should be moistened with water and smeared with a crystal (!!!) on the armpits. To say that I was deeply surprised is to say nothing. She also mentioned the dangers of my super-mega-popular deodorant, mentioning something about aluminum, breast cancer and so on. I could forget (score) about this case, but, as an impressionable girl, I found this crystal in online purchases and ordered it. The price of 150 rubles became an additional incentive to purchase. Like, it doesn’t work, well, nothing, and it’s not a pity to throw it out. Having obtained this stone sweat protector, I was very surprised. No smell, no color, tastes pleasantly sour (yes, I licked it). I was even more surprised when I tested the crystal. It really works. And not as a deodorant – it does not block pores. Natural substances in this sweat protector prevent the growth of bacteria, which are the cause of unpleasant odors.

Mustard with baking soda instead of dishwashing liquid
Foam with a slide on the sponge and squeaky plates from the freshness. You can forget about it, I was already thinking. But it turns out that from ordinary, completely non-chemical agents, you can make an excellent dishwashing powder. Mix equal proportions of regular baking soda and mustard powder. You fall asleep in any convenient container (from under the cleaning powder, for example) and use it. Can be washed under running tap water by sprinkling it onto a sponge. Or you can add it to a small bowl of water and soak dirty dishes for just a minute. The powder washes perfectly – the soda cleans and whitens, and the mustard does an excellent job of removing fat and killing bacteria. And no harm to the body. Everything is environmentally friendly and safe.
Laundry soap with baking soda instead of washing powder
Well, and what to wash with? For this important process in everyday life, supporters of ecological products also have a recipe. Laundry soap, soda ash and baking soda are mixed in equal proportions. Add about two tablespoons at once to the drum of the washing machine. This powder bleaches and washes away. It is hypoallergenic! And soda is also an excellent prevention of all sorts of reasons for the breakdown of washing machines. And you do not need to use any expensive and advertised super-products that will protect the washer from damage. Another eco-product from the time of our great-grandmothers is lye. This is, in fact, water-infused ash. Surprisingly, ash is capable of amazingly bleaching and washing things. There is nothing to say about the absolute environmental friendliness of this product.
No, well, of course, I heard from time to time delusional stories of people that you can wash your head with eggs. But I didn’t believe it. And I didn’t even imagine how you can lather an egg on your head! It turns out, as much as possible. Dissolved and beaten in slightly warm (it is important that the protein does not curl) water, the egg forms a copious lather. You can dip your hair into the resulting solution or pour it over your head (from a can, for example). Hair first adapts to natural shampoo (after our super-products, full of chemistry) and after some time it becomes more luxuriant, shiny and healthier in general. And no balms are needed anymore. After washing, the hair is very useful to rinse with herbal infusions. Chamomile is good for blondes, nettle for dark-haired, and hops for all hair types and colors.
Lemon soda instead of toothpaste
As long as dentists recommend brand name toothpastes, you (most) have everything in your kitchen you need to clean your teeth perfectly. Baking soda with a drop of lemon juice. Just moisten your toothbrush, dip it in the baking soda so that it covers the brush with an even layer, and extinguish (that is, drip) onto the baking soda with lemon juice. The soda sizzles, and the resulting solution is used to brush your teeth. It has been tested on personal experience: teeth are whitened, lemon leaves a feeling of freshness, and caries does not develop! And let scientists all over the world continue to argue about the benefits or terrible dangers of fluoride in the composition of toothpaste. With such a toothpaste, this no longer concerns you! Any household chemical and care product can be replaced with affordable and environmentally friendly products. There would be a desire to make a choice. The choice between ecology and health and beautiful jars, advertising slogans, aromatic fragrances.
