The countries of Asia are considered the birthplace of hazel trees. The tree adapts well to climatic conditions and can be grown in various regions.
The hazel is small in size. Its rounded dense crown, located close to the surface of the earth, looks more like a shrub. The height of the plant is no more than 5 m. This allows it to be grown in areas with a small area. The branches are thin and flexible. They have a smooth glossy surface and a light brown color. They grow unevenly. Their growth is directed upwards.
The crown is dense and voluminous. Large leaf plates have an elongated oval shape. The edge of the sheet is characterized by a jagged, pointed surface. Color may change over time. In the warmer months, the foliage has a deep green tint. With the onset of cold weather, it acquires a rich brown-red tone.
A young tree is easily confused with an elm tree. A distinctive feature is the kidneys. They have a soft rounded shape and a delicate green tint.
Flowers form in mid-spring. They are small in size and have a yellowish-white tint. Leaves bloom after flowering begins. The fruits are small nuts, grouped in 3-4 pieces.
The advantage of the plant is vigorous growth. The annual growth is about 30 cm. The plant has a lifespan of about 200 years. It is appreciated not only for its decorative effect, but also for its fruit. Each nut is wrapped in a thin peel. Inside there are slices with a jagged surface. The fruits have a pleasant sweet taste. They are full of useful trace elements, vitamins and fats. Due to their nutritional properties, nuts are consumed fresh and used in cooking. Hazel is a tree that has a number of advantages:
- Frost resistance – the plant adapts to low temperatures and does not require shelter for the winter;
- High early maturity – the tree begins to bear fruit already 3 years after planting;
- Drought resistance – long-term lack of moisture does not harm the root system;
- Unpretentiousness to growing conditions – it can grow both in shaded areas and in direct sunlight;
- Undemanding to the soil – any soil is suitable for planting, regardless of the composition;
- Low risk of disease – the tree is resistant to pests and fungi.
For active growth, hazel need only timely watering. Sanitary pruning is necessary in the fall.
Hazel is famous for its decorative properties and productivity. It will take root well in any area.
