🙂 Greetings to everyone who came to my site! Today is a male topic. Hat etiquette for men can help you avoid awkward situations. Let’s talk about it.
The hat is one of those accessories that even the most elegant men are often afraid of. If many do not dare to wear a bow tie, because they do not know how to tie it, then they do not take risks with hats only because, in principle, few people are wearing them now, which means that there is always a danger of being known, at best, as a black sheep, at worst – ignorant.
But they don’t wear it in vain. It is difficult to think of a headdress more suitable for the fall than a good old felt hat. And for the summer, straw is ideal.
Types of men’s hats
- top hat is a hard hat with brim and flat top. In the days of Pushkin, only the aristocratic elite of society wore it, now it is the uniform of circus magicians and equestrian dressage athletes;
- bowler hat is a solid men’s hat with a round top and narrow brim. The pots were invented by the British, but they became part of XNUMXth century American fashion;
- fedora – a headdress made of soft felt with a gathered ribbon around the crown, invented in the 1880s and named after the popular operetta in those years. There are three “hollows” on the crown, so it is easy to lift the hat with three fingers. Fedor was worn by gangsters and Hollywood stars of the 1940s, as well as by Frank Sinatra himself;
- homburg – looks like a fedora, but there are no two depressions on the sides of the crown, and the fields are slightly bent upward along the entire perimeter. Homburg is not as formal as a top hat, but more ornate than a fedora. Such hats were loved by politicians and diplomats in the XNUMXth century, as well as by gangsters;
- trilby – reminiscent of fedora and homburg, but less formal and associated with jazz culture. The crown of the trilby is deeply dented, and the brims in front are slightly lowered;
- boater – a French hard straw hat with a cylindrical crown and straight brim. Has not lost popularity since the beginning of the XNUMXth century;
- The cowboy hat was invented by John Stetson in the 1860s. Popular in the southwestern United States, northern Mexico and the western provinces of Canada. It is an attribute of American cowboys and ranchers, as well as country music performers.
Nowadays, it is a stylish and elegant wardrobe item. Typically, the hat is worn with a classic suit, although some types look quite natural with jeans and a T-shirt.
Hat Etiquette
When to take off your hat:
- during the sounding of the anthem, men must take off their headdress when raising the flag;
- in church, or during religious services, weddings, funerals (with the exception of several denominations);
- when talking to a woman. Remaining in a hat at this moment is considered rude and disrespectful;
- restaurant, during meals (an exception may be fast food establishments);
- indoors: theater, auditorium, workplace, etc. Hat removal is not required in lobbies and corporate elevators – these places are equated to the street. Taking off the fedora, you should take not the fields, but the very top of the head.
When to lift:
Greeting strangers and also to show your respect. It is customary to greet acquaintances with a light nod and a touch on the edge of the hat. It should be raised as a token of gratitude and appreciation, and also if you are going to ask permission for something.
When a man can keep his hat on:
- during outdoor activities such as sports events;
- in an elevator when there is no woman in it;
- during some religious ceremonies, men need to wear a headdress;
- in public buildings such as airport, hotel lobby, etc.
Accessories attached to the hat strap should be on the left side. Despite the fact that hat etiquette is a dying art, taking off your hat in an elevator when a lady is riding in it or when a woman enters the room you were in are true deeds of a gentleman.
“It’s all in the hat” – why do they say so?
There are several versions of the origin of the expression, which means that everything is in order, the job is almost done.
- Previously, officials who dealt with court cases took bribes in their hats. If an official took a bribe, then the issue can be considered resolved.
- In the old days, when the post office did not yet exist, the documents were delivered by messengers. In order not to lose important papers, they sewed them under the lining of the cap. Thus, the most important “affairs” were in the headdress.
- Under Ivan the Terrible, some court cases were decided by lot, and the lot was drawn from the headdress of the judge. In other words, the whole matter was decided in a hat. This version is recognized by many linguists as doubtful: the word “hat” came to the Russian language a little later.
