By formatting cells in Excel, we change the appearance of a number without changing the value itself. You can apply both a number format (0.8, $0.80, 80%, etc.) and any other formatting (alignment, font, borders, etc.).
- Enter the value 0,8 in the cell V2.
By default, Excel uses the format General (rather than any special number format). To apply number formatting, use the dialog box Format Cells (cell format).
- Highlight a cell V2.
- Right click on it and select Format Cells (Format Cells) or click Ctrl + 1.
A dialog box of the same name will appear.
- For example, select on the tab Number (Number) format Currency (Monetary).
Note: In the sample (Sample) Excel shows what the formatted value will look like (preview).
- Press OK.
Cell V2 still contains the number 0,8. We have only changed the appearance of this number, not the value itself.
The most commonly used formatting commands are available on the tab Home (Home):
- Click the percentage icon on the tab Home (Home) in the section Number (Number) to apply the percentage format.
- Align the number to the center by clicking the corresponding icon on the tab Home (Home) in the section Alignment (Alignment).
- Change the font color on a tab Home (Home) in the section Font (Font).
- Add borders to the tab Home (Home) in the same section.
