Flat soles are unhealthy

Podiatrists around the world are alarmed by the increasing number of injuries among people who like to wear flat shoes. Fondness for sandals, flip-flops and ballet flats can lead to leg pain, injuries to the lower leg, “shooting” in the back and even arthritis, doctors say.

“Over the past three years, a huge number of women have managed to complain to me about pain in my legs. Just last week I had three of these patients, ”says Mike O’Neill, an orthopedic surgeon.

However, Dr. O’Neill is confident that this summer the situation will worsen even more. “During the heat, the girls will pull out their favorite slippers from the dressers or buy the now fashionable gladiator sandals. Well, they have problems with the spine, ”he promises.

How does a flat sole ruin our health? Firstly, people do not notice that while walking in such shoes they begin to shuffle their feet. Flat soles, as it were, “force” the feet to move inside the sandal, stretching the ligaments and tendons. Such seemingly invisible displacements can eventually cause severe finger pain – especially in the big one.

In addition, when the feet feel uncomfortable, the knees “pour in” behind them. “People who play sports usually hurt their knees,” sighs Mike O’Neill. “But in this case, 20-year-old girls become the“ victims ”. I have only one piece of advice for such cases: do not wear flat shoes all the time. But don’t overuse high heels either. The ideal heel size should be no more than an inch (about 2,5 cm). ”
