Extracurricular reading in grade 2: bibliography, stories, books, poems

Extracurricular reading for the summer in grade 2 is an important stage in the development of a child. This helps the child to develop, gain new knowledge and not lose the knowledge gained during the year. In addition, reading habit and reading comprehension help the child become more attentive and do better at school.

Extracurricular Reading Tasks

Although at first glance it may seem that the list of extracurricular literature for the summer is just a whim of the teacher, it is not. Summer reading is needed to help the child develop and acquire useful skills.

In Russia, a list of summer literature is not issued in every school, although summer reading helps a child to develop even during a rest period.

In Russia, summer reading should solve the following tasks:

  • Increase reading speed. Reading speed requirements increase every year, so without additional training, a child can read few words per minute.
  • Development of horizons. Teachers give out the list of books starting from the first grade. The development of outlook occurs throughout a person’s life, therefore, in the second grade, literature is designed to help continue to develop it.
  • Forming the right values and attitudes. Reading stories helps educate a child morally. He develops concepts of social life.
  • Assimilation of more complex material. As the child grows, the complexity of the works for the summer also changes. Every year he will learn to assimilate more difficult material.

That is why it is important that the child not only spends time at the computer and on the street in the summer, but also read books.

Second grade reading speed requirements

In the second grade, the requirements for the child increase:

  • The number of words per minute read doubles to 65 words per minute.
  • While reading, the child must read the words with the correct stress.
  • The child should pronounce the words clearly, not swallow sounds and pronounce the endings clearly.

To check the child’s reading speed level, give him a product of his level and ask him to start reading, mark a minute and after the time has passed, stop him and count the words. Compare its result with the requirements. If it is not correct, then pay more attention to how much the child reads.

List of works for the summer

The most basic books to read for second graders are:

  • “The Scarlet Flower” by Aksakov;
  • “The Tale of the Priest and His Worker Loaf” and “The Tale of the Golden Cockerel” by Pushkin;
  • “By the Pike’s Command” by Tolstoy;
  • Andersen’s The Princess and the Pea;
  • Puss in Boots and Cinderella by Charles Perrault;
  • “The Adventures of Chipollino” by Rodari;
  • “In the country of unlearned lessons” by Geraskina;
  • “Moroz Ivanovich” by Odoevsky;

It is also important in the second grade to start learning poetry by heart, which allows you to develop the child’s memory. Verses such as:

  • “What is good and what is bad?” Mayakovsky;
  • “The sky was breathing in autumn” by Pushkin;
  • “Night” and “Birch” by Yesenin;
  • “The swallows are gone” by Fet.

By reading and memorizing poetry by heart, the child develops memory, imagination and attentiveness.

Summer reading helps the child not to relax during the summer. Thanks to this, he will come prepared for school on September 1 and will do better than his classmates, who did not read in the summer.
