Many of them are rightfully included in the treasury of world literature. Several generations of adolescents have already been reading these books. They are attracted by the adventurousness, heroism of the main characters in the struggle for the truth. And these are not only boys, but also girls who dream of meeting a fearless hero on their way.

His talent was highly appreciated by famous Italian composers and writers, as well as the cult film director F. Fellini.

In his hometown, Salgari studied seamanship with the prospect of obtaining the rank of captain. But I didn’t manage to score points for admission. But he had long dreamed of becoming a brave sailor and describing his adventures.

Despite his popularity, Emilio Salgari spent his entire short life in poverty, in debt to his publishers. Family life cannot be called happy either. In the aggregate, unable to withstand the psychological pressure, he passed away by the hara-kiri method. This happened in the Italian Turin in the spring of 1911. He was only 49 years old.

Salgari’s books

The first attempt at writing was the story “Papuans” in 1883. It was published by the Verona magazine “La Nuova Arena”, where Emilio worked as editor.

The publisher was not wrong. The readers liked the rather uncomplicated story with an interesting plot and they wrote their comments to the editor-in-chief. Thus began the career of a writer. Four years later, Emilio decides to plunge headlong into writing literary works.

The author’s talent is recognized at home, in Spain and Portugal, where he is considered the discoverer of the pirate genre in literature. Practically unknown in the United States of America and Great Britain.

He was called the Italian J. Verne, Eugene Sue, A. Dumas. The family of King Umberto, who in 1897 conferred the title of knight on the writer, was read by the adventures.

The author published his first pirate novel in 1887 in the popular Telegraph magazine. The work was first called “The Ganges Stranglers”, then entered the “Pirates of Malaysia” series under the title “Secrets of the Black Jungle”. The island of Borneo in 1895 became the theater of action for the heroes of the writer’s third novel.

The most famous novel about a black corsair in 1898, was filmed in 1971 in Italy and Spain. The scene was the Caribbean Sea. The plot culminates in the main character’s revenge on the local governor. The novel found its continuation in three books about the Queen of the Caribbean, Yolanda and the son of the Red Corsair.

Some of the author’s works (“The Collapse of the Empire”, “Revenge of Janes”) were published in 1911 and 1913, after his death.
