Alkanet – alkanin) is a food dye of golden, red and burgundy color. The substance is soluble in fat, stable at normal pressure and temperature. Alkanet is found in the rootsAlkana dye (Alkanna tinctoria), from which it is extracted by extraction. The alkanet has the chemical formula C12H9N2NaO5S.

Harm E103

Long-term use of E103 can lead to the appearance of malignant tumors, as it has been proven that alkanet has a carcinogenic effect. In contact with the skin, mucous membranes or eyes, Alkanet can cause severe irritation, redness and itching. In 2008, E103 was removed from the list of food additives suitable for the production of food additives, according to SanPiN 2.3.2.2364–08.

Application of E103

The additive E103 was used some time ago for coloring cheap wines and wine corks, it has the property of restoring the color of products lost during processing. It is used for coloring some ointments, oils and tinctures.

Use of E103

On the territory of our country, the use of E103 (Alkanet, alkanin) as a food dye is not allowed. The substance is considered dangerous to human health and life.
