Deciduous begonia is an ornamental plant with a wide variety of inflorescence shades. It stands out among other indoor flowers for its attractiveness and unpretentious care.

Description of deciduous begonia

The bush of the flower is fluffy. It grows wide leaves, round and ovoid. Their edges can be curled or slightly cut. They have an interesting color, in which various shades are mixed: red, burgundy, yellow, lilac, white, light green, green, brown, silver. There are also tricolor leaves, the edges of which are framed with a dark border. The flowers of the plant are collected in small lush bunches of light, yellow or pink shades.

The shade of the inflorescences depends on the type of deciduous begonia

Scientists know about 1600 varieties of this plant that grow in natural conditions. Many of them have not yet been discovered. But only a few decorative deciduous begonias are grown in pots or outdoors. Flowers can be one – and perennial.

Names of popular types of ornamental leafy begonia

Deciduous begonia received its legendary name in honor of M. Begon. He sponsored a research expedition to the Antilles. Then more than 1000 varieties of this plant were discovered. And only a few of them are grown by housewives in their greenhouses.

Popular flower varieties:

  • Begonia “Metallica”. The length of its leaves is about 15 cm. They are covered with “metallic” pollen.
  • Begonia “Tiger”. This plant has medium-sized leaves. They have an “animal” color. Leaf shape: heart-shaped.
  • Begonia “Mason”. On its leaves there is a pattern in the form of a Maltese cross. The height of the bush is about 20 cm. The inflorescences are colored beige.
  • Begonia “Cleopatra”. The leaves of this flower are similar in shape to maple leaves. The height of the bush reaches 30-50 cm. The flowers of this variety are white or pink.

Any of these types of plants are considered unpretentious. Despite this, it is necessary to follow some recommendations for caring for them.

The plant does not require frequent watering. In the summer, 2-3 a week is enough. Stagnation of moisture in the soil must not be allowed. The root system will start to rot and the flower will die.

Before watering, check the soil for moisture

In winter, the plant should be watered no more than once a week. At the same time, a moderate temperature regime should be maintained in the room: above +10 C °. During this period, it is necessary to fertilize the soil with special substances.

With proper care, begonia blooms 2 times a year. Its flowers give a wonderful scent. This plant can be used to decorate not only your home, but also your personal plot.
