Cannes storage in winter
Proper storage of cannes in winter is one of the main requirements for caring for this exotic plant. Digging the rhizome of the flower is required annually, unless you are a resident of southern latitudes, where the temperature in winter does not drop below 10 ° C. The secrets to successfully preserving canna are pretty simple.
How to prepare cannes for winter storage
In southern climates, in order to preserve the plant, it will be enough to cut the flower in the fall and cover it from the cold with coniferous branches or straw. In the middle lane, gardeners will have to work harder so that the cannes can bloom next summer.
Only healthy canna roots are suitable for winter storage
Already in August, the preparation of flowers for the winter period begins. Watering should be gradually reduced and stopped altogether about 10 days before digging. It is recommended to dig cannes in the second half of September – the first half of October
Before starting work with the canna, you should cut off the leaves and peduncles at a distance of 20 cm from the base of the flower. In order for the roots to be preserved, the plant should be dug up along with an earthen clod. After a short drying of the roots, they must be examined for damage and disease. All unusable parts must be cut off, and the cut sites must be treated with a fungicide or manganese solution.
Features of storing cannes at home
It is good if the gardener has a special cellar or basement for storing vegetables. The cool and dark place is ideal for a cannes roots winter getaway. But even if you live in a city apartment, it’s okay.
How to store cannes at home:
- The simplest thing is to transfer the flower, along with the earthen lump, into a suitable pot and grow it as a houseplant. In this case, you do not need to cut the flower. By placing it by your balcony or window, you can enjoy beautiful flowers until mid-winter. Then the cannet will need 1,5-2 months of rest in anticipation of spring. Care in this case consists only in watering the plant.
- Refrigerator – if it has a vegetable compartment in which you can store the rhizomes. Before laying, the roots must be washed, treated with a manganese solution and, after drying, wrapped in paper, placed in the refrigerator.
- Glazed balcony – just put the flower roots in a bucket and sprinkle them with sand or earth. But this method is only suitable for regions with mild, not very frosty winters.
It is important not to forget to check the rhizomes once a month for rot and, if found, remove the damaged areas. When storing a flower in the ground, you should moisten the soil once a month to prevent the roots from drying out. As you can see, caring for a cana in winter is not such a troublesome task. But in the spring you will have your own proven planting material, thanks to which your garden will bloom again.
