Canary grass grows in the wild on the shores of lakes and in arid places, in the plains and highlands, on roadsides and forest edges. And the seeds of the bird species of this plant are excellent as food for canaries. Thanks to this, it got its name.

What does a canary plant look like?

This plant is used as fodder, hay, and pasture. It loves moisture, tolerates frost and drought well. And also it develops well on any cultivated soil.

Canary grass resistant to diseases and pests

Bird canary is grown for hay and green animal feed. Its seeds are harvested for poultry feed.

For decorative purposes, the reed variety, falaris, is used. Falaris with longitudinal contrasting stripes on the leaves is suitable for decorating flower beds. They come in white, cream, yellow, and pink. These plants are completely not capricious to the conditions, but nevertheless, it is worth knowing some of the rules for caring for them.

Growing canary grass as a herb for outdoor use

If you want to decorate a site with this grass, you must take into account its features:

  • This ornamental plant can be grown around a garden pond, on an alpine slide, in a flower bed or curb. It also creates a strong sod layer and perfectly preserves the fertile soil layer.
  • It propagates by seeds, cuttings or dividing the bush.
  • He should regularly cut off the regrown shoots. Thanks to this procedure, the plant has more new leaves, and it becomes thicker and more beautiful.
  • Under favorable conditions, the phalaris root system grows rapidly. To limit its spread, a fence must be dug into the ground along the perimeter of the flower bed to a depth of 30 cm.
  • Every 4-5 years, overgrown bushes should be dug up and divided into small independent bushes. They must be planted at a distance of 50 cm from each other.

Falyaris requires minimal maintenance. Be sure to water it in dry weather to keep its showy leaves from fading. And from time to time weed it from the weeds.

Canary grass is grown both for landscape decoration and for use in agriculture. Animals that eat this herb grow well and actively gain weight. This is due to the high content of nutrients, vitamins and trace elements that are beneficial for livestock. It is very much in demand for growing in flower beds in central Russia. This popularity is due to the attractive appearance and unpretentiousness of its decorative varieties.
