Can pregnant women take antibiotics?
Antibiotics can seriously harm the developing baby in the womb. They are toxic and can damage the auditory nerve, negatively affect the formation of teeth and kidney function. But sometimes it is just necessary to use antibiotics for pregnant women, and here it is important to choose the safest drug.
Can pregnant women take antibiotics and when is it necessary?
Doctors are trying to postpone antibiotic therapy in expectant mothers to a later period of pregnancy, since most antibacterial drugs are absorbed through the placenta and affect the development of the baby.
But a course of therapy with such drugs may be necessary for:
- ailments of the genitourinary system;
- pneumonia
- angina;
- purulent bronchitis;
- bacterial complications after influenza or other viral infection;
- purulent wounds and burns;
- chlamydia;
- tuberculosis.
These drugs are intended only to fight bacteria, so it makes no sense to use them to fight viruses. The antibiotic is prescribed by the attending physician, who must take into account the severity of the disease and the duration of pregnancy in order to prevent the development of pathologies in the child.
Antibiotics approved during pregnancy
Pregnant women can take antibiotics from the category:
- penicillins: Penicillin, Ampicillin, Amoxicillin. Although they penetrate the placenta, their negative effect on the fetus has not been established. These funds are quickly excreted by the kidneys;
- cephalosporins: Cefuroxime, Cefazolin, Zufeperazone, Cefepim are prescribed without restrictions during the period of gestation. No negative impact on the developing child has been identified;
- macrolides: Erythromycin, Azithromycin, Spiramycin pass through the placenta in low concentration. Do not lead to the development of pathologies in the child.
Despite the fact that all these funds are allowed during pregnancy, it is better not to resort to them in the first trimester, during this period the main organs of the child are laid, and it is advisable to exclude any medicinal effects. But in the future, these drugs can only be used on the recommendation of a doctor and in a strictly specified dosage.
Most of the antibacterial drugs allowed during the period of gestation are safe for the development of the fetus. Doctors prescribe these drugs to pregnant women to reduce the risks associated with diseases that can cause various pathologies during the development of the baby in the womb.
