Bubble effect: how to choose healthy water
In hot weather, many of us are used to quenching our thirst with soda. Gastroenterologist, doctor of the highest category at the Medical Center of the North-Western State Medical University named after N.I. Mechnikova Tatyana Pikina tells what kind of bottled water is useful and what can harm health.

Simple sparkling water is natural, extracted from artesian sources, which does not require special purification, and tap water, artificially saturated with carbon dioxide. Carbonic acid increases shelf life and adds flavor to the product.
Harm: carbon dioxide in the concentration in which it is contained in soda will not do much harm to a healthy person, but it can cause discomfort. It stimulates the production of gastric juice, slows down digestion, stretches and irritates the walls of the stomach, and promotes gas formation.
The Good: soda quenches thirst and maintains water balance in the body. You can drink it on the road, after training. Lemonade and refreshing cocktails are made on its basis. However, there are not enough minerals and salts in it to meet the body’s need for trace elements.
Recommendations: to avoid unpleasant consequences: heartburn, indigestion, belching, bloating and flatulence, drink soda and not on an empty stomach. And don’t overuse it – 0,5 liters a day is enough.
Contraindications: those who suffer from diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and heartburn should not drink water with gas. It causes exacerbation of such chronic diseases of the digestive system as colitis, ulcers, gastroduadenitis, pancreatitis. And in pregnant women, its use can provoke bloating and uterine tone.
2. Mineral sparkling water
Water containing more than 1 g of minerals in a liter. It can be natural and artificial, with natural gas and additionally enriched with carbon dioxide. By the way, it performs the most important function – it preserves the quality and useful properties of water during transportation and storage.
The Good: mineral water, depending on the composition, helps to strengthen the immune system, cardiovascular and nervous systems, reduce blood cholesterol, cleanse the body of toxins and toxins, remove phlegm from the bronchi and lungs, improve the condition of the skin, hair, nails. You just need to choose the one that is suitable for solving your particular problem. And it is advisable to consult a doctor in this matter.
Natural low- and medium-mineralized (with a lot of perspiration) water perfectly quenches thirst!
Harm: mineral water should not be treated as ordinary drinking water. It is dangerous to consume it uncontrollably in liters for a long time without studying the contraindications. You cannot self-medicate. It is reckless to treat urolithiasis, diseases of the digestive system, respiratory system and heart without a doctor’s prescription with highly mineralized water.
Recommendations: mineral water should be drunk according to the scheme: half an hour before meals, no more than 3 glasses a day and no longer than 30-40 days. The course is repeated three times a year. It is better to let the carbon dioxide out of the bottle before use to reduce irritation to the stomach and intestines. In an open container, water is stored for about two days, then it loses its medicinal properties. It is not forbidden to drink slightly carbonated water sometimes and just like that. On its basis, you can make delicious and healthy soft drinks. For example, add lemon or lime juice, a sprig of tarragon, rosemary or mint, a little sugar syrup.
3. Sweet carbonated water
A drink obtained by artificial carbonation of artesian or running water, to which various acids, sugar, preservatives, flavor enhancers, and dyes are added.
Harm: there are more than enough negative consequences! Sugar spoils tooth enamel, contributes to a set of extra pounds. Sugar substitutes increase appetite, have a bad effect on digestion. Acids (phosphoric, citric, malic, etc.) flush out calcium from the body, increase the acidity of the stomach. Caffeine raises blood pressure and leads to sleep disturbances. With dyes and preservatives, everything is clear: this is a poison for the body. Among other things, sweet soda will not quench your thirst! On a hot day, when there is a lot of fluid loss through sweat, a bottle of Coca-Cola or Sprite is drunk instantly. It is quickly absorbed, dramatically increases blood sugar levels, and … you are thirsty again.
The Good: drinks made on the basis of water from an artesian well, with herbal ingredients, will quench your thirst and will not harm your health. “Duchess” and “Tarhun” contain the medicinal herb tarragon, which, by the way, improves the functioning of the digestive system. Sayan and Baikal contain Leuzea extract – it relieves fatigue, has a beneficial effect on muscle activity and the nervous system.
Recommendations: if you like sweet soda, you can rarely afford to be so weak. This is even justified if you are experiencing intense mental or physical stress, because sugar gives the body energy.
But it is not at all desirable to give sweet and regular soda water to children under three years old. This is a strong blow to the sensitive body of the baby – to his stomach, intestines and pancreas. It is not necessary to teach a child from early childhood to what is of no use.
Better to buy water from sources that contain carbon dioxide. Mineral substances in combination with natural gas are better absorbed by the body. In industrial production, water is heavily carbonated in order to preserve it, and it becomes heavier. In addition, when water is bottled directly from a well, it is less likely to become contaminated. Caucasian mineral waters (“Essentuki”, “Narzan”, “Borjomi”, “Rychal-Su”, etc.) are rich in useful microelements and have medicinal properties. Water with natural mineralization and carbonation costs on average 100–150 rubles per bottle (0,7–1 l). Synthetic is much cheaper – 20–90 rubles. And be sure to read the label where the water is poured. It should be a city close to natural sources, and not somewhere in the suburbs.
Czech waters have excellent medicinal properties, natural gas and mineralization, they are bottled near the place of extraction. Now in almost any pharmacy you can find the brands “Bilinska Kiselka”, “Vincentka”, etc. And in America and European countries, Australian mineral water – “Beloka Water”, “Capi” is highly valued.
