General description of the disease
Botulism is a severe toxic and infectious disease in which the nervous system is affected and bulbar and ophthalmic syndromes are observed.
The cause of botulism is botulinum toxin from the genus Clostridia, which is produced from the spore-forming bacillus of botulism.
Types and route of toxin entering the body:
- food – a person has eaten food, water that contains a toxin;
- wound – soil got into the wound, where the process of botulinum toxin germination took place;
- children – children under the age of half a year are infected with toxin spores;
- botulism of unknown origin – doctors cannot establish a connection between the disease and food.
Botulism – its course forms and main symptoms:
- 1 light – paralysis of the eye muscles responsible for motor function occurs;
- 2 medium – in addition to damage to the oculomotor muscles, the laryngeal muscles and the muscles of the pharynx are damaged;
- 3 severe – respiratory failure and bulbar syndrome begins (cranial nerves are damaged).
The first signs of botulism are:
- the first thing is nausea, vomiting, indigestion, which after a while is replaced by constipation, bloating and colic;
- visual disturbance (the patient sees everything as “in a fog”, a veil creeps before his eyes, the clarity of vision is lost, pictures become blurry, sometimes everything is visible as through a cage;
- pains begin in all muscles;
- the person becomes pale, lethargic;
- pay special attention to salivation (dry mouth is perhaps one of the most distinguishing symptoms of botulism, with the help of which common poisoning can be separated from this disease);
- increased body temperature, blood pressure, chills;
- the voice or its timbre changes;
- respiratory dysfunction.
Healthy foods for botulism
With normal health, with botulism, you must adhere to diet table number 10.
If the patient has severe botulism, then he must be fed through a tube or prescribe parenteral nutrition. It should be borne in mind that food mixtures should contain a large amount of protein (1 grams are required per 1,5 kg of weight).
Also, the patient needs to drink a lot of water, as with botulism, a large amount of fluid is lost from the body.
If you follow the diet number 10, the following foods and dishes are recommended:
- 1 animal origin: cutlets, meatballs made from low-fat varieties of fish and meat, 1 egg per day, cottage cheese, dairy products, butter;
- 2 vegetable origin: more vegetables and fruits (just not coarse fiber), various jellies, mousses, jams from them;
- 3 porridge;
- 4 vegetarian soups;
- 5 drinks: compotes, juices, green tea, decoctions of wild rose, lingonberry, hawthorn.
All dishes should be steamed or boiled, can be stewed (but only after boiling).
Traditional medicine for botulism
With this disease, self-medication is contraindicated. At the first sign of botulism, you need to call an ambulance and while it gets you need to wash the stomach with a solution of baking soda, put enemas and give a laxative.
If the patient begins to have breathing problems, do an artificial one.
There is such a popular recipe for botulism: you need to take one teaspoon of cinnamon (crushed), stir it in 200 milliliters of cold purified water. Put on the stove and boil for 3 minutes. This liquid must be constantly stirred. You should get a thick brown mass, similar to a thick jelly. This broth should be drunk warm. If a child is sick, add a small amount of sugar for taste.
In order to prevent botulism, it is necessary to maintain all technological requirements when preserving, do not use preservation with swollen lids, wash canned fruits, vegetables, mushrooms thoroughly, remove spoiled products.
Dangerous and harmful foods for botulism
- homemade canned meat and fish;
- dried, dried, smoked fish and meat;
- canned mushrooms;
- confectionery products containing cream.
All these products in most cases are a source of botulism bacteria if the technology of preparation and storage is not followed. These foods are especially dangerous in the summer. They must be stored at a temperature not exceeding +10 degrees Celsius.
If you follow the diet number 10, you must exclude:
- rich, fatty broths made from mushrooms, meat, fish and legumes;
- freshly baked bread, puff pastry, shortcrust pastry, butter dough, pancakes, pancakes.
