Best cat litter in 2022
If you have a furry pet living in your home, then you have certainly come across an unpleasant smell from the pet’s tray. We have prepared our rating so that you can avoid the mistake of choosing the right cat litter.

Since the cats from rural houses moved to city apartments, the question of how to arrange their toilets has arisen. Unfortunately, most of the mustachioed-striped flatly refuse, like dogs, to go for a walk on a leash and prefer not to leave the usual four walls of their apartment under any circumstances.

Fortunately, all felines are extremely clean creatures, so they find it necessary to do their business in the same place, so accustoming them to a specially equipped toilet is usually quite simple. However, seals have one feature: they are used to carefully burying “traces of a crime” – this is how these predators hide their presence from potential victims in the wild in order to make it easier for themselves to hunt.

And, perhaps, it is precisely because of this that the arrangement of a cat litter box has long been the only difficulty in keeping these practically trouble-free pets in a city apartment.

Fortunately, in our time, all these problems have long been solved due to special fillers for cat litter, which are not only able to perfectly absorb moisture, but also absorb unpleasant odors. Now it is not necessary to change the contents of the tray every time the cat goes to the toilet, and in some cases, the filler can even be simply flushed into the toilet, and not thrown into the trash.

And today there are so many types of cat litter on sale that sometimes you wonder: how to choose the one that is best for my cat?

How to choose cat litter

It would seem that it could be easier than pouring filler into the cat litter – it is important that the cat has somewhere to go about his business, and then bury the “traces of the crime”, as his natural instinct tells him. However, even here there are subtleties that all owners should be aware of.

Modern cat litters are made either from clay, or from silica gel, or from plant materials (sawdust, corn, soybeans). All of them are safe for animal health, but have their own characteristics. Clay and even wood shavings can form dust that cats inhale, which is clearly not good for them. Also, lumps of these fillers often remain on their paws – this is especially true for animals of the Siberian and Persian breeds, in which thick hair grows between the fingers. Therefore, for such seals, fillers with large granules from vegetable raw materials are best suited.

Cats with sensitive paws should use only fine litter or wood pellets in the tray. And if you have a small kitten in your house, teach him to walk on sawdust or corn – sometimes stupid kids, while playing, can swallow a little filler, and plant components will not harm their health in the way that clay or silica gel could do.

And, of course, do not forget about your own comfort. Firstly, you can choose the flavoring of the filler to your own taste. Secondly, of course, it is more convenient to use products, the composition of which allows you to flush the used granules down the toilet, rather than messing around with taking out the garbage.

Popular questions and answers

We talked about the features of cat litter with veterinarian, livestock specialist Anastasia Kanina.

What is the difference between absorbent and clumping fillers?

Clumping litter is ideal for long-haired cats. Every time the cat visits the toilet, the litter forms a lump that locks the liquid. It can be removed with a shovel and the remaining filler remains dry and clean.

Absorbent fillers must be replaced completely once a week. Feces must be cleaned after each visit to the toilet.

What are the pros and cons of wood fillers?

Wood filler is suitable if there are people with allergies, puppies or kittens in the house who taste everything. But it spreads around the apartment, dusts and stains the paws of long-haired cats.

Clumping wood filler is very economical, forms small lumps that can be drained into the sewer.

What are the pros and cons of corn fillers?

Corn fillers (waste from grain production) are very good, but they are expensive and are only imported. But they are suitable not only for cats, but also for rabbits and small rodents.

What are the pros and cons of silica gel fillers?

Silica gel is not dusty, very economical, but expensive and crunchy under the paws (some cats get scared).

What can replace cat litter?

Some cat owners use sand, sawdust, or paper. Someone teaches a cat to go to the toilet with the help of special devices. Village cats go outside. In any case, loose, dry soil is preferable, in which it is convenient to dig a hole and then bury it, because cats are extremely clean.
