The effect of basal metabolism on the rate of weight loss
Basal metabolism is a measure of energy expenditure at rest. The basic metabolism is characterized by the minimum level of processes necessary for the body that constantly support various organs and systems of the human body (kidney function, respiration, liver function, heartbeat, etc.). With respect to the value of the basal metabolism, the indicators of the body’s energy metabolism (daily calorie consumption) can be determined with high accuracy using various methods with the known characteristics of physical and social activity during the day.
Factors affecting basal metabolic rate
The value of the basal metabolism is maximally influenced (on average) by three factors: age, gender and body weight.
The average muscle mass in men higher by 10-15%. Women have almost the same amount of adipose tissue, which results in a lower basal metabolic rate.
The same dependence determines and influence of a person’s age by the amount of basic metabolism. The average statistical person loses more and more their muscle mass with age – every year physical and social activity decreases.
Body weight has a direct effect on the basal metabolic rate – the more weight a person, the more energy is spent on any movement or movement (and here it doesn’t matter what moves – muscle tissue or adipose tissue).
How to determine basal metabolic rate
The weight loss diet calculator calculates the basal metabolic rate according to 4 different methods (according to Dreyer, Dubois, Costeff and Harris-Benedict). Basal metabolic values obtained by various methods may differ slightly. For the final calculations, the Harris-Benedict scheme was used, as the most universal.
According to state regulatory documents, for calculations related to the assessment of the energy characteristics of the body, it is necessary to use energy consumption tables by sex, age and body weight (but the boundaries of the age ranges are up to 19 years, and by weight 5 kg. – therefore, the calculation is carried out by more accurate methods, and secondly, the upper weight limit for women is 80 kg, which in some cases is clearly not enough).
Calculation of energy consumption for men (basic metabolism, Kcal)
Weight Age | 18-29 years | 30-39 years | 40-59 years | 60-74 years |
---|---|---|---|---|
50 kg | 1450 | 1370 | 1280 | 1180 |

65 kg | 1670 | 1570 | 1480 | 1360 |
70 kg | 1750 | 1650 | 1550 | 1430 |
75 kg | 1830 | 1720 | 1620 | 1500 |

60 kg | 1380 | 1340 | 1300 | 1230 |
65 kg | 1450 | 1410 | 1370 | 1290 |
70 kg | 1530 | 1490 | 1440 | 1360 |

At the third step of the calculation in the calculator for the selection of diets for weight loss, the results of calculating the basal metabolic rate for all currently used methods (according to Dubois, according to Dreyer, according to Harris-Benedict and according to Costeff) are given. These values may slightly differ from each other, but fit within the boundaries indicated in the tables for calculating the body’s energy consumption, and complement each other.
