Apple tree Pepin saffron: description
The apple tree “Pepin saffron” is a winter variety of apples that is widespread in Russia and the CIS countries. It has advantages and disadvantages. Caring for it is necessary to obtain a rich harvest.
Description of the apple tree “Pepin saffron”
“Pepin saffron” was brought out by Michurin in 1907. More than 20 new varieties were developed on its basis. After 4 years, the tree begins to bear fruit. One apple tree gives up to 250 kg of fruits. They are suitable for any type of processing and are delicious fresh.
The tree is of medium size and dense. The branches are pubescent and sloping downward. Leaves are matte, have a pointed tip. Apples weigh from 75 to 135 g. Top covered with smooth, dense skin. The shape is round. The fruits are slightly ribbed. The color is yellowish green. The top of the fruit is covered with a red blush. The taste is sweet and sour. The collection is carried out in September, but apples need to lie down for 1,5 months to become tasty. They can be stored until March.
The variety is considered self-fertile. However, if you want to increase the amount of your crop, plant pollinating apple trees in the area.
The apple tree is characterized by:
- consistently high yields;
- early fruiting;
- relatively high degree of self-fertility;
- attractive appearance;
- the possibility of long-term storage of the crop;
- easy portability of transportation.
All this makes “Pepin Saffron” popular in garden plots.
The apple tree does not tolerate severe frosts, but recovers quickly. It is poorly resistant to fungal diseases, moth attack and scab. To prevent the fruits from crumbling or shrinking, prune the apple trees all year round. Some of the tree’s fruit may be small, which is also considered a disadvantage.
How to plant “Pepin saffron” and how to care for it?
The apple tree requires some care and attention. Spray trees with fungicides and insecticides regularly. Do this before bud break, after young leaves appear, and after flowering is over.
Feed. Use mineral fertilizers with nitrogen in the spring, with potassium in the summer, and with phosphorus in the fall. Universal top dressing – wood ash. It can be used all year round.
Trees need neutral soil to grow. For planting, choose small hills so that the water does not stagnate
In October, clear the ground of rotten fruits, fallen leaves and branches. Mulch the trunk circle with fresh manure or humus. Whitewash trees for the winter to protect them from disease.
Take care of the apple tree regularly, and in September it will delight you with a perfect harvest.
