Antivir – action, indications, dosage, contraindications, side effects

Antivir is used in infections caused by the herpes simplex virus – herpes labialis, genital herpes. The preparation is an antiviral drug for topical application, it is effective against herpes, chickenpox and shingles viruses. The drug is a topical cream and is available without prescription.

Antivit is a topical antiviral drug that is active against herpes, chickenpox and shingles viruses.

Antivir – indications and dosage

Antivir is a drug recommended for infections caused by the virus:

  1. herpes simplex – labial herpes,
  2. genital herpes.

Dosage

Apply a thin layer of Antivir cream to the affected skin 5 times a day every 4 hours for 5-10 days. Treatment should be started as soon as the first symptoms of infection appear. The preparation should not be used on the oral and vaginal mucosa.

Antivir and contraindications

Hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation is a contraindication to the use of Antivir ointment.

Antivir – warnings

  1. A doctor should be consulted if the disease does not improve after 10 days of treatment.
  2. Antivir is intended for use on the skin.
  3. The ointment should not be applied to the mucous membranes (e.g. of the mouth, eyes or vagina).
  4. Be careful not to let the preparation come into contact with the eyes.
  5. In case of impaired immunity, please consult your doctor before starting treatment.
  6. Herpes is infectious.
  7. You should wash your hands before and after applying the cream.
  8. Among the excipients, the preparation contains cetyl alcohol, which may cause contact dermatitis.
  9. The use of ointment for pregnant women is allowed only after consulting a doctor, when, in the doctor’s opinion, the benefit for the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus.
  10. Breastfeeding women should consult a doctor before using the preparation.

Antivir with other medications

After topical administration of Antivir, the possible interactions are not clinically significant.

Antivir – side effects

At the site of application of Antivir ointment, the following may occur:

  1. prickling, tingling sensation
  2. discomfort
  3. reddening,
  4. drying,
  5. itch,
  6. exfoliation of the skin,
  7. erythema or contact dermatitis,
  8. rare: sudden hypersensitivity reactions including angioedema.
