What are canker sores?

Mouth ulcers are mouth ulcers that appear under the influence of various factors.

Symptoms of aphthas include burning, itching or stinging, and pain in the mouth. The symptoms worsen with talking, eating and drinking. Ailments are stimulated by hot, spicy, acidic food and drinks.

The mouth ulcers usually occur on the mucosa:

  1. the inside of the cheeks,
  2. on the gums,
  3. on the inside of the lips,
  4. on the palate,
  5. on or around the tongue.

When do mouth ulcers develop?

Maintaining proper oral hygiene is extremely important because the oral mucosa is very well supplied with blood, and therefore it is sensitive to temperature changes, pH changes as well as bacteria, viruses and injuries. The oral cavity naturally has a very rich bacterial flora. However, if the balance between good and bad bacteria is disturbed, unfavorable bacteria multiply and, as a result, inflammation of the oral mucosa. Inflammation promotes the development of epithelial defects and damage to the delicate mucosa. This is how canker sores and epithelial defects are formed.

What do mouth ulcers look like?

Aphthas are white spots surrounded by a red inflammatory border. They can be located almost anywhere on the oral mucosa. They are round or oval in shape and vary in size. They are painful, they cause unpleasant discomfort in the mouth, which makes everyday activities such as eating, drinking and talking unpleasant.

How are mouth ulcers formed?

In the beginning, redness appears as the aphthous develops. Subsequently redness becomes an ulcer, covered with a thin gray membrane, surrounded by a red ring.

Usually, canker sores last from 4 to 7 days. The healing time is several days to several weeks. They can relapse 2 to 6 times a year.

What are the causes of canker sores?

The cause of aphthae is unknown. One of the factors is genetic predisposition. Among the studied patients, as many as 40% of patients confirmed the presence of recurrent aphthae in the family.

Stress and infections are other causes of aphthae. Aphthas may also arise as a result of local injuries, e.g. during treatment at the dentist, after brushing the teeth too hard, as a result of abrasions against orthodontic appliances.

Aphthas develop as the body’s response to allergies and when the immune system is lowered in patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Aphthas can be a symptom of serious diseases. Therefore, if they persist for more than 10 days and their clusters are very large, consult your dentist or doctor.
