Advent means in Latin “advent”. It corresponds to the period during which the faithful await the coming of Christ among men. Advent season begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. As for the Advent calendar, he was born in Germany in the 19th century. It would seem that at this time Protestant families used to hang a religious picture on the wall, or give it to their children, during the 24 days before Christmas. It was in 1920 that the first Advent calendar, with 24 doors, was marketed. The small chocolates would appear later, in 1958. (source: website of the diocese of Nanterre). Today there are different kinds of Advent calendar. There are the “religious” with pretty pious images, the greedy ones with snacks to snack on, the toys with figurines or other playful surprises, and those which are empty, leaving parents the possibility to fill them as they wish.
