6 ways to stay active while working in the office full time

Many people, when asked why they do not play sports, answer that they are too busy with work. And while this may be true to some extent, even during the working day, everyone is able to remain physically active. Among other things, it will help you feel fresh and vigorous, which in itself is the key to productive work. Here are some tips for those who can’t find time for the gym or other physical activity:

  1. Use the stairs

If you do not need to climb to the 20th floor or lug heavy bags, do not wait for the elevator, but go up the stairs. This simple change will help you feel good, get your adrenaline rush, and soon you’ll get so used to it that you don’t need an elevator anymore!

  1. Work at the table while standing

I often come across the recommendation to work while standing, and many companies, especially tech companies, use desks at which you can work while standing. These jobs have many physiological and psychological benefits. Research conducted in Canada and published in the publication Preventive Medicinehas shown that such tables reduce sitting time and improve mood. And although not all companies can afford to equip their offices with such furniture yet, each of us is able to perform some tasks while standing – talking on the phone, discussing issues with colleagues, viewing documents. If you want to go one step further, use a treadmill (imagine you work and walk at the same time). I first read about such a desk in the book “Eat, Move, Sleep” and later regularly received positive reviews about working at such a “desk”. While performance is somewhat reduced, the health benefits are clear.

  1. Stretch periodically

Most likely, you spend most of your time hunched over your desk. From time to time (say, once every half hour) it is worth taking a short pause and rebooting. For example, it’s good to stretch!

  1. Conduct work meetings while walking

A study from Stanford University found that walking increased creativity by as much as 60%. And while walking inside an office or building has proven to be as effective as walking outside, while walking as a bonus, your body will receive the much-needed fresh air and vitamin D.

  1. Have lunch outside of the workplace

Of course, it is very convenient to have lunch (or dinner if you are still in the office in the evening) right at your desk – this way you can kill two birds with one stone. But don’t do this! Take a break from work and dine elsewhere, as research has shown that walking at lunchtime can help reduce stress and increase work enthusiasm.

  1. Organize a team play

Even though we spend most of our day with colleagues, it’s amazing how little we actually interact with them. A team game – sports quest or paintball – will make you sweat and bring you together emotionally.
