Now there is a lot of controversy around childbirth: someone says that natural ones are much better than with surgery, and someone else is the opposite.
Some mothers are so afraid of childbirth and pain that they are willing to pay for a cesarean. But no one will appoint them without testimony. And “naturalists” twist their fingers at the temple: they say, the operation is scary and harmful. Both are mistaken. Debunking six of the most popular caesarean section myths.
1. It doesn’t hurt as much as natural childbirth
The very moment of childbirth – yes, of course. Especially if the situation is urgent and the operation takes place under general anesthesia. But then, when the anesthesia releases, the pain returns. It hurts to stand, walk, sit, move. Suture care and postoperative restraints are another story that has nothing to do with pain. But it will definitely not add happiness to your life. With natural childbirth, if it goes right, contractions are painful, not even the very moment of childbirth. At their peak, they last about 40 seconds, repeating every two minutes. How long it will last – only God knows. But after everything is over, you will safely forget about this pain.
2. This operation is unsafe
Yes, a cesarean is a serious surgical intervention, an abdominal operation that affects the internal organs. However, the danger of this procedure should not be exaggerated. After all, no one has long considered it dangerous, for example, to remove the appendix. A planned cesarean has long been learned to do under local anesthesia, carrying it out as gently and safely as possible. There are even varieties: glamorous and natural cesarean. By the way, an indisputable plus – in the event of an operation, the baby is insured against birth injuries.
3. Once caesarean – always caesarean
Since it was not possible to give birth for the first time, it means that next time you will go to the operation with a guarantee. This is a very common horror story that has nothing to do with reality. 70 percent of mothers after cesarean are able to give birth on their own. Here the only question is in the scar – it is important that it is wealthy, that is, thick enough to withstand a second pregnancy and the birth itself. One of the main risks is the development of placental insufficiency, when the placenta attaches to the area of scar tissue and does not receive the required amount of oxygen and nutrients because of this.
4. Breastfeeding is difficult after a cesarean.
One hundred percent myth. If the operation was performed under local anesthesia, the baby will be attached to the breast in the same way as in the case of a natural birth. Of course, there can be problems with breastfeeding. In general, they quite often occur in women who have given birth for the first time. But this has nothing to do with cesarean.
5. You will not be able to walk or sit for several weeks.
Any pressure on the seam area will be uncomfortable, of course. But you can walk in a day. And the most desperate mothers jump from their beds and run to their children after a few hours. There is nothing good in this, of course, it is better to restrain heroism. But you can walk. Sitting – even more so. If only the clothes did not press on the seam. In this case, the postpartum bandage will save.
6. You will not be able to establish a maternal bond with your child.
Of course it will be installed! You carried it in your stomach for nine months, cherished the thought of how you would finally meet – and what if you don’t get the connection? Boundless maternal love is such a thing that does not always appear immediately. Many mothers admit that they felt the need to take care of the child, feed him and lull him, but that same unconditional love comes a little later. And the way in which the child was born is not at all important.
