13 things a dentist will never agree to in a dentist’s chair
We find out together with the professionals in our field!
Of course, I believe more in dentistry. But all procedures are different, as are the patients themselves. Each of us has our own indications, aesthetic preferences, capabilities and requirements for a specialist. And here there are no uniform rules – what is allowed and what is not. Here are 7 things that I personally would never agree to in my colleague’s chair. So, I will never settle for….
1. A procedure in which the doctor is not qualified
Of course, if you need to put a temporary filling, then any doctor with a dental diploma can handle it. But if we are talking about a more complex procedure, then I refer only to a narrow specialist. So, in the case of root canal treatment, I will go to an endodontist. But if I see that a particular endodontics doctor does not have the main, but only additional specialization, then I will also refuse his services. Because I know how difficult this work is, and to do it efficiently, you need good practice. Before entrusting a doctor to perform any complex procedure, ask his specialization.
As a professional implantologist, I would never agree to install the newest implant model. First, it has not been sufficiently tested yet. Secondly, it may turn out that spare parts for a newly appeared implant simply do not have time to be certified and brought to Russia. And it turns out that the implant itself was placed, but the tooth was not. The same goes for rare materials. There are manufacturers that occupy only 1% of the Russian market. Since certification and recertification in Russia is expensive, it often becomes unprofitable for such companies to conduct further sales. Therefore, it may turn out that spare parts, if necessary, will simply not be found later. Therefore, before implantation, ask your doctor the name of the model that he plans to install for you, and check how widespread it is with us.
3. A procedure for which I have no medical indications
There are a number of procedures that are purely aesthetic in nature. And here it is not the doctor who determines their necessity, but the patient himself. Beauty is a very subjective concept. It’s a matter of taste. For example, my teeth are not perfectly white, and there are microcracks on the enamel, which, in principle, are invisible. In my case, someone would want to fix it: put veneers, change the shape, make a snow-white smile that would delight others. But I personally do not seek to impress with my teeth, but consider them primarily from a functional point of view. And I consider any such procedure as a potential risk. Alas, there are no risk-free procedures. True, it is important to bear in mind here that the same veneers are really necessary in some cases. For example, when a tooth consists of a solid filling. Therefore, when you are offered something, you need to clearly understand for yourself whether there is a medical indication for this.
4. Fast and inexpensive cleaning
We are talking about the popular powder teeth cleaning. It has its advantages – it is fast and inexpensive. But there is also a huge disadvantage – microparticles damage the enamel. Therefore, I choose professional manual cleaning. Yes, it takes longer – about 2-2,5 times. This is a very time consuming process and must be performed by a qualified technician. And the time of such a specialist, naturally, is more expensive. Unfortunately, this position cannot be conveyed to the patient. He will not understand why such a “simple” service can cost 6000 rubles. He sees an ad “Brushing your teeth for 999 rubles” and thinks: “What’s wrong with that? Just brush your teeth. “
5. Procedure from the advertising slogan
Dentistry, and indeed medicine in general, should not follow marketing. When I see an advertisement “we will do it in an hour” or “implantation in one visit,” a red light immediately turns on for me. You can’t even try to fit medicine into any framework. This is not an area where you need to achieve a record result at any cost. It is necessary to build on the testimony and circumstances. No matter what kind of dental procedure I have been performed, I do not need any promises and slogans from the doctor. It is important for me to come to a known good result. Let the path to it be longer.
6. Lack of good equipment
The doctor must be provided from a logistical point of view. Yes, a professional can work with any tools, but good ones will work better and faster. Of course, it is difficult for the patient to assess this. But there are two things that can be traced without a professional look: the presence of additional light and magnification. There are stages of dental treatment when there is not enough light on the hanging lamp, the doctor practically does not see anything. There should be a headlight and at least some magnification (microscope or at least binoculars).
7. Treatment by a dentist, which I do not value as a person
I have known personally all the dentists who help me for a long time. As a rule, we cooperate with them. Therefore, it is easy for me to evaluate them as specialists. But I also pay attention to human qualities. I would not be able to entrust my teeth to a dentist whom I do not value and do not respect as a person. Or someone you don’t know personally. The attitude to work is no less important than professionalism. Therefore, before entrusting a new specialist with some complex and expensive procedure, do something simple with him. Get to know him and decide for yourself how comfortable you personally are in his chair.
What does the other specialist think?
Dentist-therapist, chief physician of the clinic “Personal Doctor”
The first thing I would not agree to is treatment without anesthesia… There are so many trials in life to come up with new ones. Prosthetics with bridges I consider the method obsolete due to the advent of implants. Having lost one tooth, do not overload the rest.
Wouldn’t do and prosthetics with gold or other metal crowns. The time when the inhabitants of the USSR were recognized by their beaming smiles is over. But this does not apply to the stump inlays made of gold-bearing alloy. The antiseptic properties of gold create good conditions for the preservation of the tooth.
Search and installation of cheap implants Is also a bad idea. Good implants are worth their money, and you don’t need to skimp on it. I also have a bad attitude towards low prices for teeth whitening… No one will run at a loss, and good systems don’t come cheap.
Still dubious installation of veneers not according to indications, namely for “masking” uneven teeth. This problem can only add to yourself. Orthodontic treatment is necessary here, and then veneers may not be needed. As for the wisdom teeth, for the most part they only interfere, cause pericoronitis with difficult teething, shift adjacent teeth with a lack of space and simply worsen the quality of hygiene.
